MapInfo Invests in Wireless Application Protocol --WAP-- Technology

MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq:MAPS) today announced it acquired a minority equity interest in its distributor in Finland, Karttakeskus Oy, a mapping technology and solutions company. The investment gives MapInfo access to Karttakeskus' market-leading expertise in location-based WAP mobile applications, including its new Address Finder service based on MapInfo technology and developed with Nokia and Telia. With this investment, MapInfo will accelerate its own application of WAP technology.

"Finland has the highest mobile phone usage per capita in Europe and is therefore a hotbed for new developments in the booming mobile voice and data industry where MapInfo already offers business critical solutions," said David Flower, MapInfo's vice president and general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). "This investment in our long-standing distributor in this important Nordic market expands MapInfo's technology offerings to include location-based services for wireless handheld devices."

"With the rapid growth in the spatial solutions market, we are excited to be partnering with a world leader in this field," said Pauli Kulvik, CEO, Tamro Corporation, parent company of Karttakeskus Oy. "MapInfo's participation brings considerable strength to our mapping subsidiary."
