Nokia Joins Hands With SOHU.com and BMCC to Offer Wireless Services in China

Nokia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SOHU.com and Beijing Mobile Communications Corporation (BMCC) to offer end-users a wide variety of services covering sporting events, entertainment, news, stock quotes, and shopping guides.

The three partners will jointly develop innovative mobile Internet services and applications for mobile terminal users in China. These applications and services will be based on the Nokia WAP platform, and offered through the BMCC's network in a trial project. SOHU.com, China's leading Internet portal, will identify and develop content and application for the services.

"Innovative mobile Internet services will bring lots of information and services available while on the move," said Malcolm Arnold, Vice President, System Business, Nokia (China) Investment, Co., LTD, "Nokia aims to cooperate with local partners to develop and offer more mobile Internet services for Chinese mobile terminal users. It will also be beneficial to Internet businesses, which will enjoy the extension of the mobile Internet, receive positive publicity, and attract more advertisers. All that is needed for mobile e-commerce."

Working with Beijing Mobile Communications Corporation (BMCC), Nokia demonstrated the use of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) to browse the Internet in Chinese in late October 1999. It was the first time that Nokia WAP gateways and the Nokia 7110 media phone have been used to browse the Internet in Chinese, marking important progress in Nokia's efforts to develop WAP applications for the Chinese market.

Nokia offers operators a complete end-to-end WAP solution, including WAP gateways, mobile terminals, browsers, and tools for WAP-based content creation and delivery. Nokia Artus Messaging Platform is a comprehensive platform for operators wanting to offer WAP and messaging applications. Messaging Platform offers a secure Internet connection as well as several flexible billing options, including service-based billing.

SOHU.com (www.sohu.com), the leading Internet portal in China, is the first major Chinese-language web portal on the Internet. Founded by Dr. Charles Zhang, it is now the most popular Web destination in China, currently posting over six million page views a day. SOHU.com has pioneered many firsts including introducing banner ads and the standard of Web traffic assessment to the PRC Internet.

"Combining SOHU.com's strength in the Internet and the strengths of Nokia and BMCC in mobile communication, we are one step further towards making the Internet an indispensable part of Chinese daily life." Charles Zhang, CEO & Chairman of SOHU.com said.
