i2mobile.com Provide Major UK Wireless Solution

Woolwich Bank Launches Mobile Telephone Banking Services

Limerick based, i2mobile.com, "the internet 2 mobile people" have been chosen to provide the content aggregation service for the first Woolwich WAP banking service, launched to one hundred customers.

The Woolwich and i2mobile.com are working together to broaden and develop this parntership between now and April, when the Woolwich propose to make its WAP service widely available in the UK. Commenting at the announcement Mr. Jim Nugent, General Manager, i2mobile.com said, "This is the first UK bank to offer interactive banking/service by WAP mobile phone to real customers and we are delighted to have been a partner from the start. Many people are talking about delivering a WAP service, The Woolwich with i2mobile.com are the first to actually deliver. This is a venture which has all the hallmarks of success."

Working closely with Nokia and Vodafone, these customers of The Woolwich's Open Plan integrated banking services started to bank on the move through WAP mobile telephones at the beginning of February. This groundbreaking service allows their customers to manage their personal finances wherever they are in the world through any electronic channel. Specifically they can transfer money, pay bills, view balances and transactions through a secure Internet link made possible by Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology.

What is especially interesting about this solution is The Woolwich strategy to co-ordinate ancillary services around the core banking functionality. The Woolwich is keen to develop business and lifestyle information services to offer customers a one-stop destination. This strategy will ensure a very popular destination portal and greatly complement their banking functionality and ultimately grow their customer base.

"The Woolwich was looking for a partner to develop and manage content information services for its WAP portal. We choose i2mobile.com because they understood our business vision and had the competence to develop solutions quickly. i2mobile.com's Mobiport Technology met our three key concerns of Security, Reliability and Scalability. Their technical team was able to design the architectural solutions and then demonstrate them through their own WAP gateway. A highly robust service was implemented, with full redundancy and firewalls. This technical expertise combined with their unquestionable professionalism and an ability to work to tight deadlines gave us the confidence we required to choose i2mobile.com," says Janette Winter, eCommerce Manager, The Woolwich.

Winter continued, "This is an evolving technology and we need partners at the cutting edge. i2mobile.com clearly understood our objective from the start and had a singular focus to do whatever it took to ensure we met our goals."

Although the WAP standards have been published for over a year, the adoption of WAP applications has been slow outside of Finland and Sweden. Now with major financial institutions like The Woolwich releasing mobile capabilities to their customers. i2mobile.com forsees an accelerated adoption of these applications throughout Europe and North America
