Psion PLC (LSE: PON), a leading mobile Internet technology company and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), a leading provider of integrated communications and embedded electronic solutions, today announced that they have agreed to cross-license their GSM cellular and mobile Internet data technologies. These technologies will be used in innovative new wireless products developed by the two companies under the terms of the joint development agreement announced in January. Each company may also further develop these technologies for use in a wider range of wireless products developed outside the joint development agreement.
Motorola will license to Psion its advanced GSM cellular communication Module. This module transceiver provides industry-leading triple band GSM capability and also will be used in Motorola's smallest cellular phones. The triple-band technology enables mobile cellular communications in 142 countries worldwide, including much of the United States.
Psion will license to Motorola its next-generation Halla processor. The Halla processor is designed to optimize the performance of products based on Symbian's EPOC technology platform. The processor is designed for low power applications but can operate at speeds of up to 200 MHz. Halla is notable as being among the fastest, lowest-power and smallest-footprint processors in its class.
David Levin, Psion CEO, said, "This cross-licensing agreement is evidence of the depth of cooperation between the companies and builds on the relationship established with our joint development project. The agreement gives both companies best-in-class technology, which will provide a vital competitive edge in emerging mobile Internet markets."
