Mercator Broadens 'XML-to-Any' Capabilities With Support for Wireless E-Business Application Standard

WML Support Allows Seamless Integration of Applications with WAP Servers, Accelerating Extension of E-Business to Wireless Applications and Devices

Mercator Software (NASDAQ: MCTR), the e-business transformation company, today announced it has joined the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum, and is supporting integration with WAP applications and devices through the Wireless Markup Language (WML) standard. Support for WML within Mercator E-Business Integration Broker products gives end user customers the ability to easily integrate information from existing business systems with WML formats, accelerating the integration of wireless applications into their e-business infrastructure. In addition, Mercator's powerful WML transformation support allows third party solution providers to deploy wireless applications that can be readily integrated with the diverse applications of their enterprise customers.

The Wireless Application Protocol is an open, global specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices to easily access and interact with information and services instantly. The WAP Forum is the industry association comprising over 300 members that has developed the de-facto world standard for wireless information and telephony services on digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals. Wireless Markup Language is a specification based on XML that is intended for use in specifying content and user interface for narrowband devices, including cellular phones and pagers.

"E-business is rapidly moving to anytime, anywhere access to corporate information and business applications," said Dave Power, vice president of marketing, Mercator. "WML is becoming an important e-business document format to help make this happen and, as with other e-business formats, requires integration with a company's e-business environment to provide full benefit. With our Mercator E-Business Integration Broker software, we not only simplify the creation of WML interfaces, but provide unprecedented capabilities for transforming data between applications and any other e-business formats, including XML-based standards, EDI, S.W.I.F.T., ACORD and more."

In supporting wireless applications, for example, Mercator E-Business Integration Broker software can enable a telecommunications company service representative to receive information regarding a service outage through a WML transaction sent from a computer system in the home office directly to the rep's mobile device. In the same exchange, the service rep can use the mobile device to check the history of service problems in the area where the problem occurred. All data required to complete this exchange, including information from the home office applications and databases, can be easily transformed into and out of WML using Mercator E-Business Integration Broker technology.

"With the speed of e-business increasing every day, wireless applications are becoming critically important to companies' ability to compete," said Scott Goldman, CEO of the WAP Forum. "Mercator's membership in the WAP Forum and support for wireless application standards will help accelerate the use of wireless e-business applications."
