Puma Technology Awarded Distributed Synchronization Patent

Puma's Mobile Application Platform Now Protected By Eleven Total Patents

Puma Technology (Nasdaq:PUMA), the leading provider of the essential software infrastructure for the ubiquitous mobile Internet, today announced that it has received its sixth patent covering various aspects of its synchronization technology. The new patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,044,381) is the eleventh software patent in the Company's intellectual property portfolio, which protects a wide range of technologies relating to mobile and wireless Internet infrastructure. In addition to the six synchronization-related patents, the Company holds four patents relating to Web-based change detection, end-user notification and personalization technology, and one patent relating to its file-transfer technology.

The new patent allows the capabilities of Puma's synchronization technology to be spread among two or more devices, enhancing performance. The Company filed for the patent in 1997.

"Without intelligent synchronization, personalization and notification technologies, you are missing essential bricks for building a pervasive and wireless mobile Internet," said Brad Rowe, Puma's CEO and co-founder. "Puma holds a broad-based patent portfolio in these key technology areas and will continue to vigorously pursue additional protections for core technologies and ideas we develop."

When a user manages data across multiple devices, such as handheld organizers, smart phones, PCs or pagers, it is critical to be able to synchronize the data on each device. Puma now has six patents relating to intelligent synchronization, an increasingly important service given the proliferation of mobile computing and Web-based devices and the rapidly increasing availability of wireless Internet connectivity.

Puma recently announced support for the SyncML initiative, which is focused on developing and promoting an open industry specification for universal synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple networks, platforms, and devices. In addition, Puma currently plans to apply its multi-patented technologies toward supporting the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and Symbian initiatives.
