TAIWAN CELLULAR LAUNCHES MOBILE INTERNET USING PHONE.COM UP.LINK SERVER SUITE

Delivery of Internet Content and Services Offered to Taiwan’s Wireless Market

Phone.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:PHCM), a leading provider of Internet software and services, and Taiwan Cellular Corporation (TCC), the largest GSM 1800 operator in Asia and the fourth in the world, today announced that TCC has launched the delivery of Internet services to mass-market wireless telephones throughout Taiwan. After licensing the Phone.com™ UP.Link™ Server Suite Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) gateway last November, TCC began to distribute Internet-based content and applications to its subscribers earlier this month.

Using the scaleable UP.Link Server Suite WAP gateway, TCC initially launched wireless Internet services on the Nokia 7110™ wireless handset, as well as the Motorola Timeport, which is equipped with the Phone.com UP.Browser. The Phone.com WAP gateway works in conjunction with any wireless phone equipped with a WAP 1.1 -compliant microbrowser, such as the Phone.com UP.Browser™. As a result, network operators like TCC are empowered with a complete WAP-based solution, capable of delivering WML content to any WAP handset, and supporting a robust selection of wireless Internet applications.

"Being at the center of Asia's fastest growing wireless market, it is critical for us at TCC to meet our 3.4 million subscribers' needs and their increasing reliance on the Internet for mobile information," said Joseph J. Fan, President of TCC. "Phone.com recognized these needs early on, developing WAP-compatible software and gateways. Their foresight and product quality has been integral to our ongoing customer fulfillment."

TCC has launched the first Taiwan-based mobile Internet with the deployment of customer service applications, information services migrated from Integrated Voice Response (IVR) systems and Creative Lifestyles over the UP.Link Server Suite, complementing email, visual voicemail and personal organizer tools. In addition to these applications, subscribers have access to valuable Web information, including news updates, stock quotes, weather reports and e-commerce purchasing power. Over 120 content providers have the capacity to syndicate their content to TCC, further solidifying the GSM carrier's brand and product offering.

"TCC and Phone.com share an impressive commitment to delivering a first-rate, market-ready product," said Tony Miranzadeh, vice president and general manager of Asia Pacific and Latin America sales at Phone.com. "By adopting our complete WAP-based solution, TCC has recognized the value it can bring to wireless subscribers and has set a standard for the delivery of WAP services throughout the Asian market."
