TANTAU Brings Convenience of Wireless Internet Banking to Customers of Leading Scandinavian Bank

MeritaNordbanken Implements Trial of TANTAU Wireless Internet

Platform to Bring Mobile Banking to 1.5 Million Online Customers

TANTAU Software Inc. today announced MeritaNordbanken, the leading bank in Europe's Nordic region, has begun a trial of TANTAU's open mobile e-commerce -- or m-commerce -- software platform, with the aim of bringing convenient wireless banking to Merita's customers. TANTAU's multi-platform solution is the first to allow businesses to offer completely secure wireless Internet transactions and the ability to keep a direct link to the customer.

"Our research shows that consumers will demand the ability to conduct m-commerce transactions on wireless devices," said Rebecca Diercks, director of Cahners In-Stat Group's wireless service. "MeritaNordbanken is a leader among financial institutions offering secure and convenient wireless banking services to meet the demands of these mobile users. TANTAU's Wireless Internet Platform gives Merita the ability to extend its online customer relationships to include wireless banking in a scalable, secure environment."

MeritaNordbanken recently began targeting current online banking customers to offer wireless Internet banking capabilities. These customers are conducting balance inquiries, paying bills, transferring money and conducting stock trades, among other services. With 1.5 million customers using its advanced Internet banking services since first introduced in 1996, MeritaNordbanken is widely recognized as having the top online banking service in the world. Today, Merita has 3.3 million Internet banking sessions per month and predicts this to reach 5 million sessions per month by the end of 2000. Of these 5 million monthly sessions, 10 percent are expected to be wireless.

"As pioneers in the online banking business, we are now revolutionizing customer service by offering wireless banking capability to hundreds of thousands of customers," says Matti Karvonen, first vice president of Internet banking for MeritaNordbanken. "To meet our goals, we needed a scalable and secure method for wireless banking transactions. TANTAU has enabled Merita's wired banking applications since 1996 and we are now excited to work with their wireless banking solution."

With m-commerce expected to grow exponentially over the next three years, businesses who can offer secure wireless transaction capabilities today have a head start in capturing and retaining customers. Introducing wireless into an enterprise's e-commerce capability is much more than simply attaching a wireless gateway to a Web server. A business' wireless Internet channel needs to be seamlessly integrated with the rest of its e-commerce systems and needs to be able to handle the great increases in the number of transactions that are soon expected. TANTAU's technology allows the merging of a business' wired and wireless e-commerce systems as well as offering security, scalability, availability and transaction integrity.

"Scandinavia is at the forefront of the m-commerce explosion and MeritaNordbanken is an innovative leader in its wired and wireless banking offerings," remarked John Sims, president and CEO of TANTAU. "TANTAU's Wireless Internet Platform is proven technology that gives Merita the ability to meet the expected m-commerce growth and assures their customers that banking transactions are secure. We look forward to helping Merita integrate their wired and wireless business applications and increase their market lead through improved customer services."
