Tivoli Delivers First End-to-End Solution to Integrate Technology Management with Handheld Devices

Tivoli(R) Alliance with Palm, Inc. Streamlines Adoption and Management of PDAs by Enterprise Customers

Tivoli Systems Inc. and Palm Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) today announced an alliance that will provide enterprise IT solutions that refine enterprise management of the industry-leading Palm OS(R) handheld computers. As part of this alliance, Tivoli has launched the new Tivoli Device Manager for the Palm(TM) Computing(R) platform.

Driven by the rapid increase in business applications based on handheld operating systems, PDAs are becoming standard business tools in many of the world's largest companies. These handheld computing devices, once relegated to simple tasks like keeping addresses and appointments, now are being used by large enterprises to create a competitive business advantage. Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform allows enterprises to quickly integrate and manage handheld devices within their existing infrastructure, thereby reducing support costs.

"The enterprise is an increasingly important sector of the handheld computing industry," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development for Palm. "Tivoli and Palm recognize that enterprise IT organizations will need to manage these devices if they expect to become integral business resources, and our alliance aims to support those management requirements. As the workplace adoption of Palm OS handhelds increases, corporate data is spread beyond the traditional boundaries of IT. With Tivoli Device Manager for the Palm Computing platform, IT departments can leverage a proven, integrated and end-to-end solution that can rapidly assume full operational control, while maintaining consistency across the enterprise."

"PSW Technologies has a highly mobile consulting workforce that is widespread throughout multiple geographic locations. We need to keep these employees - who use a variety of tools, including PCs and Palm devices - up to date with the latest information. The Tivoli Device Manager allows us to manage the environment securely and without increased overhead or administrative effort," said Pedro Fernandez, vice president of Strategic Initiatives, PSW Technologies, Inc. "We recognized the value that this fully integrated system offers our organization and are impressed with Tivoli's vision for pervasive systems management."

VicRoads, the government agency responsible for maintaining roadways in the state of Victoria, Australia, has been a beta customer of Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform, using the solution to support a custom Palm application that delivers daily job lists to road crews throughout the state. The Palm units synch with both a Palm server and a Lotus Notes database.

"Today, VicRoads uses Tivoli as an integrated enterprise management platform for management of distributed systems. We recognize the value of Tivoli for management of IT resources and endorse the vision of extending IT management to pervasive devices that are becoming more important to our end users as a business tool," said John McNally, general manager of information technology and telecommunications, VicRoads. "We can simplify the support of distributed applications by integrating our IT and device management into the Tivoli management platform."

The Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform reduces costs, protects investments and quickly gains management control by:

Supported devices include Palm III(TM) Series, V(TM) Series and VII(TM) Series of handheld computers, IBM Workpad c20 and c3, TRG Pro, Symbol SPT 1500 and 1700, Handspring Visor and Visor Deluxe and Qualcomm pdQ SmartPhone.

"Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform delivers a rapid return on investment," said Israel Gat, vice president and general manager, Pervasive Management Business Unit, Tivoli Systems. "By incorporating the management of Palm devices directly with the current Tivoli management infrastructure, organizations can immediately begin to deploy and maintain applications on Palm OS devices, understand what devices and applications are in use and proactively troubleshoot these handheld computing tools."

"Our introduction of the IBM WorkPad has helped CIO's manage the growing number of Palm-based devices within their enterprises," said Adalio Sanchez, general manager, IBM Mobile Computing. "Now with the introduction of the Tivoli Device Manager for Palm Computing Platform, IT managers will have the ability to better manage PC companions because of the ability to deliver software distribution and device inventory tools through the Tivoli Framework, providing a true end-to-end managed solution. IBM Mobile Computing and Tivoli will continue in partnership to deliver the best tools, devices and solutions to enterprises world-wide."
