TIW Affiliate First to Bring Mobile Internet to Brazil

Telesystem International Wireless Inc. (TIW) is pleased to announce that its largest affiliate in Brazil, Telemig Celular Participacoes S.A. (Telemig) is the first cellular operator in Brazil to be able to offer mobile Internet access using WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). Telemig worked with Ericsson, Nokia and Nortel Networks to deliver Brazil's first WAP compatible TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) network.

Telemig is a leader in integrating Internet and wireless networks in Brazil. It was the first cellular operator to offer a short-message based service (SMS), celul@r on line, in the country, and this service now offers two-way SMS services. The new WAP-based services will be actively promoted once WAP handsets are readily available as expected in the second half of the year.

In the Czech Republic for example, we will be implementing GPRS technology and will be offering WAP-based services over high speed data access technology in the second half of this year" added Sven Borgstrom.

In addition, TIW is a member of leading standardisation and industry bodies, including the WAP forum. It is also a founding member of the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum and of the North American third generation (3G) trial, one of the most advanced UMTS test beds in the world.
