25 Leading Organizations Define Worldwide Standard for Mobile Digital Signature

Another eleven organizations joined The Mobile Electronic Signature Consortium. Among these are: Advance Bank, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd., Cable & Wireless HKT, EXCELSIS Informationssysteme, fun communications, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, NSE Software, PAGO eTransaction Services, PayITMobile and Ways India Ltd. Thus, a total of 25 international organizations from the mobile phone and IT sectors opted for membership in the Consortium. It is the objective of this Consortium to define a worldwide standard for the mobile digital signature.

The activities of the Consortium are directed towards the development of an application interface that will facilitate standardized communication with shop providers, financial services providers, lotteries and other E-Commerce organizations on the Internet. Thus, it will be possible for customers to enter their mobile phone number instead of their credit card number when shopping online. The signing functionality of the mobile can be used to digitally sign the transaction, ensuring maximum security in electronic and mobile trade. The digital signature can be legally effective and ensures non-repudiation of the transaction.

The Consortium has been founded in December 1999. The founding members were: Siemens, the mobile operators E-Plus Mobilfunk, Mannesmann Mobilfunk, T-Mobil as well as VIAG Interkom, the smart card manufacturers Schlumberger and Gemplus, the T-TeleSec Trust Center of the Deutsche Telekom, cv cryptovision and Brokat Infosystems AG.
