Cardservice International and Communicate Inc. of Fort Collins, Colo., are partnering to explore the newly emerging opportunity of wireless Internet access.
The product of this partnership will offer merchants the ability to complete payment transactions directly from a personal digital assistant (PDA) -- in real time and with complete security.
The partnership begins now, at the start of this year's second quarter. It is based on the Palm VII(TM) organizer and its Internet access capabilities. Cardservice International foresees improving on current technology by adding layers of security to the communications process (Secure Sockets Layers) -- the first requirement for payment transaction processing.
The new software, developed by Communicate, will lead Cardservice International's merchant account holders to payment processing screens simply by activating the Cardservice icon. Access to the Internet will be provided by the LinkPoint API(SM) product.
Adding non-cash transaction capability to hand-held organizers represents a virtual revolution in the way merchants and others on the go can do business. It has all the advantages of a point-of-sale (POS) terminal with none of the bulk. Most encouraging of all, transactions occur in real time.
Because they are transmitted instantaneously, purchase approvals are also received instantaneously at the time of sale, eliminating the risk of the many mobile solutions that hold data for later transmission.
"This exciting innovation provides a real opportunity for e-commerce leadership," said Cardservice International's senior vice president for sales, John Burtzloff. "We are very excited about the speed and security this offers our mobile merchants."
The time to process a transaction is quick: With the integration of Communicate's SMRT Sales Professional application, a full catalog of products or services, electronic invoices and customer lists are at the ready within the PDA. All users will need to do is fill in the appropriate credit or cash fields and Cardservice International does the rest.
