ePhysician Creates the First Comprehensive Security Infrastructure for Medical Transactions using Wireless Handheld Devices

ePhysician Becomes the First Palm-based Medical Device Company to Meet Highest Federal Standards

ePhysician(TM), the leading developer of secure, Palm-based wireless handheld medical devices which help healthcare professionals improve the quality of care, today announced that it is integrating VeriSign's wireless Internet trust services as well as security technologies from other leading companies to create the first security solution for PalmOS handheld devices intended to be Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant. This ensures unparalleled patient confidentiality and allows physicians to practice safer healthcare.

"This relationship ensures patient confidentiality and allows physicians to focus on the practice of medicine without worrying about security issues," said Stuart Weisman, M.D., founder and CEO of ePhysician. "This technology benefits our physician customers as well as institutions that want to share new data with affiliated physicians who are using ePhysician."

This solution enables physicians and other healthcare providers using ePhysician to digitally sign and encrypt transactions, such as prescriptions, and then securely transmits them over the Internet to various trading partners. The use of VeriSign wireless digital certificate services also allows ePhysician to verify that physicians using the ePhysician system are credentialed and licensed.

ePhysician delivers critical information and transaction capabilities to physicians when and where they need them, whether in the exam room, on rounds, on the road or at home through a Palm-based secure wireless handheld medical device.

Using VeriSign's managed wireless digital certificate services, ePhysician has created a system that extends digital certificates and public key infrastructure (PKI) technology to handheld devices and desktop personal computers. This enables physicians to conduct confidential health care transactions that support non-repudiation through a Palm-based device via the Internet.

"The Federal government and the healthcare industry have recognized PKI-based solutions as a key to HIPAA compliance," said Mary Anderson, vice president Enterprise Marketing at VeriSign. "We are pleased to be working with ePhysician to enhance the security available in healthcare applications delivered over wireless networks."
