Hitachi SuperH Processor Drives Third Generation of HP Jornada PC Companions

Hitachi's SH7709A Processor Inside Rapier-Class Operating System In New HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC

Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. today announced that its SuperH(R) RISC microprocessor is embedded in the new Rapier-class operating system in Hewlett-Packard Company's new HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC. This is the third generation of HP Jornada PC companions featuring Hitachi's SuperH microprocessors to drive the small but powerful devices, integrating business and entertainment functionality, based on the Microsoft Windows CE operating system.

"Hitachi's SH7709A processor was the natural choice to drive the HP Jornada 540 Series Pocket PCs, given our rich history of alliances with Hitachi Semiconductor," said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager of HP's Asia Pacific PC Division. "Hitachi processors have helped us establish ourselves in the handheld market and are part of our vision of future innovation in the mobile computing space."

The HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC is designed around Hitachi's SH7709A CPU, which at 133 megahertz, is the fastest processor to be designed into any palm-size PC. By utilizing the SH7709A CPU, the HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC delivers excellent battery life while offering the performance needed to run multimedia applications such as MP3 player software. In addition, the HP Jornada 540 Series Color Pocket PC also features a 65,536-color display, digital imaging software and the ability to listen to the news or a book -- all while the user is mobile.

"This is only the next step in what we envision will be a long line of Windows CE powered HP Pocket PCs embedded with Hitachi microprocessors," said Steve Imsen, product marketing manager for Hitachi Semiconductor (America). "HP's integration of the SuperH RISC processor in its HP Jornada Pocket PC not only demonstrates a powerful alliance; it underscores our lead in the Windows CE market, achieved by Hitachi's SuperH series and technical support that delivers mobile devices to market sooner and with higher levels of functionality."

Hitachi's SuperH processors are in a broad range of Windows CE devices, from low-power-consumption portable products, to information appliances, to high-performance, multimedia-oriented devices such as the Sega Dreamcast game player, to the auto PC.

The SH7709A CPU is part of the popular SH-3 family of RISC processors that are designed to meet the demanding price/performance and power consumption targets of sophisticated consumer and embedded electronics. Hitachi provides the most complete line of off-the-shelf processors, companion chips and reference platforms for Windows CE, which enables OEMs to reduce their time-to-market.
