Informix Paves the Way to Buying Via WAP

Extends Personal Touch to Mobile Devices with i.Sell WAP Available Immediately on Sun and Nokia

Informix(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:IFMX), the technology leader in the software infrastructure for the i.Economy, today announced the availability of Informix i.Sell(TM) WAP on Sun Microsystems(TM) (NASDAQ: SUNW) Solaris(TM) Operating Environment, as an additional module to its flagship e-commerce solution i.Sell. Starting in Europe, Informix is paving the way for extended personalized merchandising through new wireless channels.

The explosive growth of mobile communication networks based on the Wireless Applications Protocol (WAP) offers new opportunities for corporations to reach and communicate with their customers and within their organization. i.Sell WAP removes the complexity of supporting wireless communications and offers a single e-commerce platform for integrated customer relationships throughout various digital channels.

An i.Sell WAP application enables customers to use their mobile phone for internet services, such as browsing through catalogues, viewing the latest news or market quotes, purchasing goods and services and performing order tracking. The single, integrated infrastructure of i.Sell ensures that all customer interactions, regardless of the channel used, are captured and tracked, enabling a truly personalized service to be delivered.

Integration with i.Sell

i.Sell WAP is fully integrated with i.Sell, the 100% Java, end-to-end e-commerce solution. It takes advantage of the powerful i.Sell Personalizer to deliver content that is not just tailored to the individual but also to the capabilities of the mobile device. Because it is deployed on Informix Internet Foundation.2000(TM), geographic positioning from the mobile network can be integrated with the i.Sell WAP, enabling content to be targeted based on the location of the individual.

"With WAP and the market penetration of mobile devices, retailers now have a unique opportunity to deliver advanced and highly personalized e-commerce services via the mobile phone," said Jim Hendrickson, senior vice president and group executive, i.Informix business group. "Time to market and personalization to the needs of the customer are critical to success in this market place. i.Sell WAP is the most innovative solution available today to meet these objectives. Customers like COLT Telecommunications can now deliver content to their customers that is appropriate to the bandwidth of the mobile networks, the display capabilities of the mobile device, the location of the phone, and the personal preferences of the user."

"By the end of 2003, greater numbers of people will access the Internet via a mobile device than a personal computer," predicted Gerhard Romen, vice president Enterprise Sales, Nokia Internet Communications. "Using the Nokia WAP Server, such offerings as Informix i.Sell can quickly bring new and innovative services to this growing community of mobile internet users."

The Nokia WAP Server is the world's most recognized WAP server(a), allowing businesses to fully leverage the power and functionality of their service offerings in a mobile environment. It is an open server platform for mobile applications that lets companies maintain control over end-to-end security of access to data and customer traffic between the wireless network and the Internet or their own internal networks. The Nokia WAP Server complies with the WAP 1.1 standard specification and sets the industry milestone with its security option, the first commercially available implementation of the Wireless Transportation Layer Security (WTLS).

Informix and Sun Microsystems have worked together to pre-configure WAP packages to best support and secure scalability and reliability for Internet and WAP services.

"The power and flexibility of Java technology combined with the robust Solaris platform are enabling Informix to bring the i.Sell WAP component to market very quickly," said Andy Ingram, vice president, Solaris products, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Together, Informix and Sun can enable our mutual customers to leverage the massive potential of mobile commerce, using a single, integrated and scalable software and hardware infrastructure."
