Novatel Wireless Announces Lancer 3W Wireless Modem

Rugged Modem Provides Affordable, In-Vehicle Wireless Data Solution for Public Safety

Novatel Wireless Inc., a leading provider of wireless Internet solutions, announced today the Lancer 3W(TM) Wireless 3 Watt Modem targeting Public Safety organizations, including police, fire and emergency medical services.

The Lancer 3W is a compact, external CDPD modem that can be mounted in a vehicle console or trunk, providing wireless access to critical information such as local, state & federal databases, outstanding warrants, or patient information. Armed with real-time data, public safety professionals can make informed decisions that ensure their safety as well as the people around them.

"The Lancer 3W emphasizes our commitment to providing mobile data solutions for the Public Safety market," explained Bruce Gray, senior vice president of sales & marketing for Novatel Wireless Inc. "By offering rugged hardware, flexible software, a 3 year warranty and 24/7 customer support, we've created a very powerful communications tool for Public Safety organizations while reducing costs and repair 'downtime.'

The Lancer 3W is the first in a series of wireless data solutions marketed under Novatel's MissionONE(TM) Public Safety program, announced earlier this year. Ideally suited to harsh, mobile environments, the CDPD modem combines extreme temperature tolerance (-22(Degree)F to 158(Degree)F), wide voltage range of 9 volts to 30 volts and a splash proof aluminum case. Bundled with Novatel's Wireless Modem Manager software, the Lancer 3W enables fast installation and configuration. The Lancer 3W will begin shipping in May 2000 and carries an MSRP of $599.

"The Lancer 3W offers the capabilities that our public safety customers require, at a price that they can afford, while matching its competition in ruggedness, temperature range and shock tolerance," said Steve Brumer, partner at Global Wireless Data, a distributor of Novatel Wireless products.

CDPD stands for Cellular Digital Packet Data, a method of sending and receiving data in small bursts over the existing analog cellular network (AMPS). CDPD offers secure, encrypted data transmission at up to 19.2 kbps in most U.S. metro areas and some international markets. The Lancer 3W, with its powerful 3 watt signal amplifier, allows users to employ the CDPD network even in outlying, suburban areas where coverage is not as prevalent.
