Sprint PCS CEO Andrew Sukawaty Discusses Wireless as the ``Killer App'' on CEO Live

Shares Unique Insights on the Evolution, Impact and Future of the Wireless Industry

In a recent interview on CEO Live, producer Marc Holland talked with Andrew Sukawaty, chief executive officer of Sprint PCS.

Sukawaty discussed the challenges of managing enormous growth, the rapid adoption and impact of wireless technology and the role of the media in defining wireless as the "killer app" for e-commerce.

Sukawaty discussed leading an organization that grew from 500 to 22,000 people in three years, saying, "The only way we've been able to keep it on time, under budget and successful is by having a plan that people understood and could do their own thing to. And I think that's the difference in today's world."

As the chief executive of the world's premier wireless communication company, Sukawaty shared his unique insight on the impact of mobile technology on society, the evolution of cellular phones from a high-priced luxury to a consumer staple and using his own phone to stay in touch for business and with his family.

On the widespread acceptance of the wireless phone among consumers, Sukawaty commented, "They can see how it enhances their lives. They can see that a mobile phone is not only a safety tool, but it's a tool I can use to be in touch with my family."

Holland, CEO of CEO Live, asked how the media has dubbed wireless the "killer app." "This is a revolution that is occurring in terms of the way people communicate with each other and the media is rightfully reporting on that," commented Sukawaty.

Sukawaty also discussed some of the other chief executives he most admires. He cited Jack Welsh, for creating an environment where people can excel and create higher and better profits for their business; Craig McCaw for his vision and risk-taking; and Steve Case, for understanding consumer needs.
