BlueCore Evaluation Platform Leads the Way for Bluetooth

Newly available from Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) is the BlueCore(TM) Evaluation system.

This hardware platform enables Bluetooth application developers and integrators to learn more about Bluetooth. The system will also allow evaluation of CSR's single chip Bluetooth solution (BlueCore(TM)01) including the embedded software stack.

The Evaluation System will give Bluetooth designers access to user-friendly PC-based command and watch windows, running under Windows(TM) 95/98. This will allow the sending and monitoring of individual commands/events and the exchange of simple data sequences between Bluetooth systems.

CSR's revolutionary BlueCore01 is the world's first, true single chip implementation of a Bluetooth wireless system. Together with an external Flash ROM containing the CSR Bluetooth software stack, it provides a fully compliant Bluetooth system for data and voice communications. The design is optimized to require very few external RF components to facilitate a rapid design of the motherboard, and therefore the fastest possible time to market.

The BlueCore Evaluation system hardware consists of two units, each containing a module including the BlueCore01 IC Flash Memory (for the protocol stack) crystal reference and antenna. Also included in each unit are a motherboard, containing host I/O and man-machine interface including RS232 drivers and external connector. Audio Codec and external audio plugs for a headset, connectors for audio PCM stream and synchronous serial interfaces are also provided.

Each unit is housed in a molded case designed for desktop operation and connection to the serial port of a PC at 115.2K baud. The lid of the case is removable to allow quick and easy access to the PCM and synchronous serial interfaces for embedded software development. Each compact unit measures just 155mm by 130mm by 30mm.

Optional software tools, available from Cambridge Consultants Ltd., allow Bluetooth host applications to be developed for PC and other target hardware platforms such as ARM7. For those customers who wish to embed the Bluetooth software stack and applications on BlueCore to create Bluetooth systems with no host, a full set of development tools is available for the embedded processor, including documentation and API definition, C compiler, assembler and source-level emulator/debugger.

The versatile kit is also interoperable with Ericsson and Digianswer evaluation kits. For details on pricing, availability or to order the BlueCore Evaluation System visit www.cambridgesiliconradio.com.
