Epic Data and Symbol Technologies Deliver Java and XML Technology to the Global Wireless Data Market

First Java-Based Solution for Symbol Devices

Epic Data International Inc. (TSE:EKD.) and Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL) today announced an agreement to jointly launch Epic Data's eXpresso(TM) application development toolkit for Symbol handheld computers at the Symbol Software Developers Conference.

eXpresso is a unique Java(TM) and XML-based wireless application development environment and programming interface for creating and enabling mobile enterprise applications. The eXpresso toolkit enables developers to re-use application code across the entire spectrum of Symbol mobile computing devices. Programs written in eXpresso are portable across 'thin' and 'thick' client devices including Pocket PC, Palm OS(R), DOS and microJava(TM) based systems. In addition, the web-enabled technology supports development on all three operating system engines powering today's Internet - Windows NT(R), UNIX and Linux.

By providing a Java platform for mobile and back-server components of wireless solutions, eXpresso greatly reduces implementation costs for delivering integrated mobile supply chain applications in manufacturing, retail, logistics, healthcare, government and education.

Participants at the conference -- June 7-10, Palm Springs, CA --will be the first to get hands-on use of the eXpresso Developers Edition.

"We're very excited to showcase Epic Data's eXpresso toolkit at our Conference. We know that standards such as Java, XML, IEEE 802.11 and operating systems like Windows CE and Palm OS are becoming widely adopted. We have been expanding our business relationships to include software suppliers and Epic is the first to provide Symbol with a Java-based solution that provides a unified application development platform for all Symbol devices," said Keith Kanneg, senior director of software marketing, Symbol Technologies.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Jacek Lipowski, chief technology officer, Epic Data, said: "eXpresso technology grew out of Epic Data's need for device-independent, platform-independent tools to develop wireless enterprise applications for our customers, mostly in the manufacturing sector. By choosing Java and XML as the underlying technologies for eXpresso, we're now positioned to deliver integration tools for B2B e-commerce and web-centric applications in the global wireless data market."
