The Open Group Announces Launch of Mobile Management Forum

Forum's First Goal is to Accelerate the Deployment of Mobile Devices and Applications for the Enterprise

The Open Group(TM) today announced the launch of its Mobile Management Forum, a consortium dedicated to speeding the adoption of wireless and mobile solutions for the enterprise.

The Forum is co-founded by Argo Interactive, Boeing (NYSE:BA), Brand Communications, Compaq (NYSE:CPQ), Diversinet, hereUare Communications Inc., Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HWP), Hitachi (NYSE:HIT), IBM (NYSE:IBM), JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM), Motorola (NYSE:MOT), NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR), NEC (Nasdaq:NIPNY), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW), Symbian, Synchrologic and XcelleNet.

The Mobile Management Forum was formed as the result of a six-month study by The Open Group on the key challenges facing early corporate and government adopters of wireless devices and applications. The research identified five major challenges which need to be addressed to accelerate the takeup of wireless technology and which the Forum will begin addressing as its first order of business.

-- Session management of wireless devices and applications

-- Data synchronisation of mobile devices and networked data

-- Co-existence of various wireless Local Area Network (LAN) and emerging wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) technologies

-- Authentication, authorization and accounting as it relates to wireless data devices and applications

-- Wireless device-independent content origination

The Mobile Management Forum will leverage The Open Group's expertise in enterprise integration and its diverse customer membership to bring together leading wireless vendors with corporate and government customers to drive early market acceptance of mobile devices and applications. The Forum will also take advantage of The Open Group's portfolio of products and services that provide standard reference models, conformance test tools and independent certification programs.

"Broad deployment of wireless and mobile devices and applications for the enterprise is being inhibited by the lack of interoperable technologies and standards," said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. "The Open Group is reaching out to the leading players and other organizations in the wireless and mobile world to drive convergence for the benefit of the end user."

The Open Group has published a White Paper in conjunction with the launch of the Forum entitled "Market Drivers for the Foundation of the Mobile Management Forum." The Report is based on extensive research of leading mobile solution suppliers and early adopters of wireless technologies. The White Paper is available from http://www.opengroup.org.

The adoption of wireless applications and devices requires a broad range of efforts. Many of these are in progress with pre-existing groups. The Forum is committed to collaboration with these other standards bodies, trade associations, and industry groups to maximize complementary results.
