(NASDAQ: CNTR), a global leader and provider of solutions that mobilize the enterprise, announced today the launch of db.star™, its secure, high- performance open source ultra-small footprint embeddable database solution for handheld devices. Designed to run on platforms including Windows-powered Pocket PC, Palm, and Linux, db.star helps facilitate instant access to enterprise information dynamically and securely while away from the office. Moreover, the db.star family facilitates the porting of mobile applications between Pocket PC, Palm and Linux.
The db.star open source kernel is based on more than 15 years of embedded data management experience. db.star sports features ideal for application developers. It has a runtime library API of more than 150 C functions, giving developers all the functionality they need to streamline the development cycle. Its ultra-small footprint allows high-performance data management in the resource-constrained environment of handheld devices. On platforms where multiple applications can be executed concurrently, db.star’s Lock Manager manages each transaction, ensuring data integrity. Integrating Centura’s patent-pending SafeGarde technology, db.star supplies total enterprise information security.
Centura’s recently announced eSNAPP 2.0 connectivity server will work hand-in-hand with db.star to securely extend critical business information from back-end systems to handheld devices in real time. eSNAPP 2.0 and db.star provide access to corporate information while keeping the right data on the right devices; server data stays on the server, immediate-need data stays on the mobile device. Bridging the gap between legacy systems and Information Appliances (IA), eSNAPP 2.0 integrates handheld devices into the mobile workers’ set of tools. The db.star product includes the open source kernel to build the database on a Win32 platform (Windows 95/98/2000 and NT) and platform support packages (PSP) which enable deployment for specific platforms such as Pocket PC and Palm. Strong encryption is provided by SafeGarde as an add-on product, which is available separately. At PC Expo, Centura is demonstrating db.linux at Panasonic’s DVD RAM partner pavilion, booth # 1C02-1C03. Centura's db.linux, a member of the db.star family, was launched in February and has met the DVD Forum's interoperability certification requirements. The high-capacity DVD RAM drives are able to store over 400,000 documents -- or more than eight 4-drawer filing cabinets of data – all on a single 4.7GB disk. db.linux will be available as the embeddable, open source database for the Linux platform to companies integrating Panasonic's, Hitachi's or Toshiba's rewritable DVD drives.
