Gemplus Showcases Industry Leading Smart Card Solutions at Java One Expo 2000

Gemplus, the world's leading provider of smart card solutions, today announced it will showcase its GemXpresso(TM) family of Java Card-based smart card solutions during the JavaOne Developers Expo in San Francisco, on June 5 - 7.

Gemplus is leading the industry in developing open platform smart card products that are being used within key market segments such as banking, wireless and network security. By supporting open standards such as Java Card, Gemplus is fostering the development of best-of-the-breed portable smart card applications that can be used in conjunction with a variety of business and consumer devices such as PCs, automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, set-top boxes and handheld organizers.

Java Card technology preserves many of the benefits of the Java programming language - productivity, robustness, security, tools and portability - while enabling Java technology for use on smart cards. This represents a powerful value proposition to today's developers -offering simpler and speedier application development capabilities as well as convenience and security.

Gemplus' GemXpresso family offers all the benefits of an open operating system such as easy implementation, flexibility, upgradeability and quick time to market. GemXpresso is the only smart card solution offering full interoperability with the Java Card API 2.1. GemXpresso RAD (Rapid Applet Development) 211 provides seamless integration with existing infrastructures and innovative development tools enabling developers to quickly bring smart card-based solutions to market. By utilizing the Java technology, GemXpresso RAD 211 makes it possible for developers to create smart card applications with a new level of interoperability enabling product differentiation and lower cost development.

"As one of the co-chairs of the Java Card Forum, Gemplus has been a strong supporter of Sun's Java Card strategy," said Remy de Tonnac, president, Gemplus Americas. "Smart cards deliver unprecedented benefits to business and consumers; we are seeing strong demand for such products in wireless, loyalty and security. For Java developers, smart card applications can now be developed easily with Java Card-based tools, such as GemXpresso RAD. Gemplus is committed to continuing to work with Sun Microsystems to develop and deliver innovative Java technology-based smart card solutions to the marketplace."

Emerging e-commerce applications, network security and wireless communications are all key drivers for the growth of Java Card-based smart card technology. Currently 44% of software developers now use Java technology, a figure that has grown steadily for several years and is expected to reach 57% by the end of 20001. Additionally, as organizations move from 'bricks to clicks' to adapt e-business marketing models, the marketplace Java-based smart card technology will continue to grow at a rapid pace. Recent projections from Forrester Research indicate that by 2004, e-commerce will primarily be used to boost sales at traditional retail outlets with the smart card as an ideal link between on merchant's web site and their traditional stores.

Gemplus has a long history of innovation with Sun and the Java Card: Wireless/telecommunications: GemXplore CASE, the world's leading SIM application development environment, offers millions of Java developers worldwide the ability to design and develop Java Card applets for SIM cards in a familiar and complete environment.

Banking/payment: Gemplus was the first to receive approval on Visa Open Platform Card V2.0 for its GemXpresso 211-V1'. GemXpresso 211 offers all services defined by Visa International's interoperable Java Card extension, the Visa Open Platform.

Network security: In June 1999, Gemplus introduced the industry's first range of smart cards to be based on Java Card 2.1 API, providing card issuers with multi-application capabilities and built-in security, including public key encryption support.
