M1 makes first live GPRS data call in Singapore using Nokia GPRS technology

M1 is the first operator in Singapore to have demonstrated a GPRS packet data call over its live network using Nokia GPRS technology. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a major stepping stone in the development towards 3rd generation mobile systems and mobile multimedia services.

The greatest advantage of GPRS for mobile subscribers lies in the possibility to have continuous connectivity to the Internet, the corporate Intranet or a WAP portal, for fast access to new content-rich services.

"While other operators are only starting to introduce GPRS in their networks, M1 is pleased to have completed an end-to-end packet data call over GPRS. GPRS will be an important carrier for M1's future data services, as the amount of Internet-based traffic in our mobile network grows," said Patrick Scodeller, Director, Engineering at M1. Since August 1999, Nokia has delivered and implemented almost 40 GPRS Core networks to leading operators in Europe, USA, Asia and China, more than any other supplier.

The Nokia GPRS solution includes the Internet Protocol (IP) based core network infrastructure, the Nokia Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), the Nokia Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), the Nokia Charging Gateway, the Lawful Intercept Gateway (LIG), the Domain NameServer, Router/Firewall and Ethernet switches, service charging and provisioning solution and applications.
