Motorola, HiddenMind and BuildNet Plan to Make Wireless Construction Management a Reality

BuildNet/HiddenMind applications running on new Motorola Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME)-enabled handset platform show potential of wireless applications

Motorola, Inc., (NYSE: MOT), a global leader in wireless communications, HiddenMind Technology, Inc., a leading mobile applications service provider (m-ASP), and BuildNet, Inc. a leading provider of management software to homebuilders and suppliers in the residential construction industry, today demonstrated innovations in the future of wireless construction management at Sun Microsystems' annual JavaOne(SM) Conference in San Francisco. BuildNet unveiled construction management applications developed for use on Motorola's new handset computing platform. These wireless applications are enabled by HiddenMind's Java technology- based Wireless Desktop(TM) workflow platform.

The new wireless handset-computing platform from Motorola's iDEN(R) Subscriber Group represents another advance in wireless communications. By utilizing the power of Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)), handsets integrating the platform will bring unprecedented features and functionality to wireless users. Details of the new platform are outlined in a separate announcement made during JavaOne.

BuildNet applications deployed on the handset platform represent a major step forward for construction and other field management applications. When the BuildNet E-Building Exchange is operational, BuildNet applications should provide its community of users, including builders, subcontractors, and their allied trading partners, with highly advanced wireless communication capabilities in real time. When deployed in a wireless environment, these applications should allow builders using any of BuildNet's seven construction management systems to engage in in- the-field, business-to-business e-commerce, and in transactions such as inventory queries, requests and return requests for prices and quotes, purchase orders, delivery sign-offs, invoices and invoice acknowledgements, directly from their job-sites.

BuildNet applications use dynamic wireless workflow technology from HiddenMind to run on the new handset platform. Wireless Desktop is a small program residing on the new handset that takes advantage of packet data to allow dynamic workflow in a wireless environment. BuildNet applications are the first to use the Wireless Desktop on the new handset, and marks the first time applications could be executed off-line in an open environment.

"With the incorporation of J2ME into mobile devices, Motorola once again leads the market with the new wireless handset computing platform," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola, Inc. and general manager of the iDEN Subscriber Group. "With the help of application developers like HiddenMind and BuildNet working to make of the Java platform's flexibility in a lightweight environment, we begin to see the potential of 3G wireless computing today."

"We created our Wireless Desktop technology to enable secure device- and applications-independent rendering of a wide variety of transactional data across a wide range of wireless devices. In doing so, we are able to take full advantage of the advanced capabilities afforded by Motorola's technology based on Sun's J2ME platform," said Ken Tyra, president and chief executive officer of HiddenMind. "The Wireless Desktop allows users of Motorola's new handsets to multitask on their wireless devices, to make use of forms-based data communications and to communicate with multiple devices across multiple carriers."

"The building industry is looking to technology for a competitive advantage," said Keith T. Brown, chairman of BuildNet. "By working with wireless leaders like Motorola and HiddenMind, we should be able to deliver meaningful applications to our community of users, providing them tools to enhance quality and increase profitability."

Motorola, HiddenMind and BuildNet have entered into a three-way agreement to bring BuildNet's applications to market on Motorola's new multiple communications and computing handset.
