Motorola Selects PacketVideo's Wireless Multimedia Solution for iDEN Handsets

Motorola, Inc., a global leader in wireless communications and PacketVideo Corp., the global leader in wireless multimedia communication software and services for mobile applications, today announced a letter of intent to bring PacketVideo's innovative MPEG-4 wireless multimedia solution to a future generation of multiple communication phones for iDENŽ wireless networks. PacketVideo's MPEG-4 compliant software-based encoding and decoding products enable delivery of a variety of content and rich media applications to mobile devices anytime, anywhere. This technology allows wireless subscribers to view live and pre- encoded streaming content such as news and financial stories, sports highlights, short entertainment clips, weather and traffic reports, and home, daycare, or work security cameras over wireless networks.

"PacketVideo technology is indicative of the future of wireless, and is precisely the type of application we envisioned for multiple communication handsets. Our collaboration with PacketVideo represents Motorola's focus on next generation wireless applications that will enrich the experience of the user," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the iDEN Subscriber Group. "With real-time streaming media, delivered directly to our advanced digital wireless phones, we are enabling new applications to make users more productive and better informed."

PacketVideo's software, which is operating system, platform, and air-interface independent, is optimized for wireless networks. Its error-resilient technology recognizes and conceals errors inherent in wireless networks, enabling mobile information devices to receive enhanced video image quality on wireless networks with bit rates as low as 14.4 kbps, as well as 2.5G and 3G networks.

PacketVideo and Motorola will also work on Java-based applications and implementations to further enhance the adaptability of the iDEN handsets' capabilities.

"Customers are demanding more sophisticated wireless Internet services, and we're helping Motorola deliver on that promise," said Dr. James Brailean, president and CTO of PacketVideo. "Our value-added streaming technology dynamically adjusts to accommodate the capabilities of various networks and devices so as to display the best picture possible. This allows innovators such as Motorola to offer a broader range of solutions to their customers, as well as deliver advanced services like multimedia."
