Red-M And Ericsson Cooperate to Create WAP Over Bluetooth Solutions

Red-M Joins the Ericsson Developer Alliance Program to Advance WAP Over Bluetooth Technology

Red-M(TM), a pioneering developer of advanced wireless Internet server products and subsidiary of Madge Networks N.V. (NASDAQ NM: MADGF), and Ericsson are cooperating to advance the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) for use over Bluetooth. To formalize this relationship, Red-M has been invited to join the Ericsson Developer Alliance Program as a Business Ally and will be demonstrating WAP over Bluetooth technology at the up-coming Bluetooth Congress at the Centre de Congres in Monte Carlo, June 13 to 16, 2000.

WAP is a powerful technology that enables mobile access to the Internet from a range of small-screen handheld devices including mobile phones. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology backed by over 1,800 of the world's leading companies. By combining WAP and Bluetooth, Red-M and Ericsson are demonstrating the future of office-based communication solutions that provide access to both the Internet and company Intranet over a wireless connection from a mobile phone or other personal device.

"To fully realize the promise of the Mobile Internet, solutions from innovative and leading companies must work together instantly, out of the box and without any complications", said Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President of Marketing and Communication at Ericsson Mobile Communications. "It is with pleasure that Ericsson has invited Red-M, as a leading player in network connectivity and integration of wired and wireless networks, to participate in the Ericsson Developer Alliance Program. This will ensure that our future products in the Mobile Internet arena are completely compatible."

"We are at the dawn of the truly wireless office in which users have mobile access to the Internet and company Intranet over a Bluetooth connection from a multitude of personal devices", said Simon Gawne, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Red-M. "By cooperating with Ericsson, we have shown how the combination of Bluetooth and WAP allows users to access information and perform m-commerce from their mobile phone while inside the office. This marks a significant step forward in the evolution of the wireless market."

Bluetooth wireless technology provides a low-cost means for communication and networking between mobile phones and other portable devices, all in a very small form factor. This proximity-based wireless specification opens the door to a wide range of exciting innovations in product design, applications, and new services. The industry-led Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) estimates that by the end of 2001, Bluetooth wireless technology will be a standard feature in more than 100 million mobile phones, millions of PCs, laptop computers and other handheld devices.
