Ricochet Wins CNET Best of Show Award at PC Expo; Named Best Internet Service

CNET Networks, Inc. named Metricom Inc.'s (Nasdaq:MCOM) Ricochet high-speed mobile wireless access as one of six Best of Show winners. Citing the need for higher speeds to make the Internet truly go wireless, CNET judges selected Ricochet as Best Internet Service at the PC Expo Best of Show Awards held this week in New York.

"With the level of excitement at the show and the number of innovative products and service to choose from, this award from CNET is further validation of how Ricochet will change everything," said Tim Dreisbach, Chairman and CEO for Metricom. "Breaking through the hype of false promises, Ricochet will provide true freedom of anytime access to information in a meaningful way allowing people to break free from the office."

Best of Show winners are based on their level of innovation. As stated on CNET's web site, "with its Ricochet network, Metricom will be the first company to offer mobile professionals true high-speed (128 kbps) wireless connections to the Internet." The Ricochet network was selected as Best Internet Service from among a group of ASPs, ISPs, hosted Web applications and wireless content providers.

Currently being deployed in its third generation at raw data rates of 1 Mbps, Metricom's MicroCellular Data Network (MCDN) technology is the foundation for Ricochet which will provide end-user mobile access speeds of 128 kbps or greater. Initial deployment of Metricom's service is currently underway in 21 market areas.

Ricochet utilizes microcell radios that are typically attached to streetlights or utility poles to deliver a mobile information solution at speeds that rival landline connections. Users simply attach a small wireless modem to their laptop; Ricochet then detects and routes signals coming from the laptop into the MicroCellular meshed network, and then out to the Internet.
