Signia Technologies and Primax Deliver the First Bluetooth Internet Access Solution

Signia and Taiwan's Primax announced the first commercial product based on Signia's Bluetooth module -- a wireless Internet gateway for the home and SOHO market.

It is the first to provide one hundred meters of range for any Bluetooth-based products and allows users to roam freely to a much wider area to reap the benefits of a wireless world.

Signia Technologies has a strong background in wireless communications and provides products from components to system solutions. To support short-range, low-power wireless communications, such as Bluetooth, Signia has designed a flexible platform that accommodates various applications, form factors, and interface requirements. Signia's patented technology enables the concept of Personal Area Networks (PAN) where a person can share, interact, and network with multiple devices. Short-range PAN applications such as schedule synchronization between a PDA and PC can use standard 0 dBm output power, whereas an access point for the home or SOHO needs to scale to higher power to support longer ranges.

Bluetooth serves a high degree of user friendliness by hiding complexity in the hardware and software. Although it provides a tremendous upside in market potential, a significant amount of expertise in RF engineering, software, and system planning is required to succeed in the marketplace. In the last six months, Signia has been working with its customers and strategic alliances to implement Bluetooth-based products, providing Bluetooth modules, hardware development kits, software, antenna design, and also qualification/certification services. Through the total-solution approach, Signia's customers and alliances have been able to focus on their core competencies and bring products out to the market at a much faster pace. The announcement today by Signia and Primax exemplifies both companies' commitment and ability to be the first to bring the technical and marketing collaboration to fruition. In addition to today's announcement of the first Internet gateway product, Signia is also the first to integrate total Bluetooth solutions in a Notebook PC. Other Bluetooth-enabled products in notebook PCs, PDAs, webpads, digital cameras, PC cards, and compact flash cards will also be brought to the market soon through Signia and its alliances.
