Tivoli SecureWay Manages WAP Device Access to e-business Applications

Tivoli Reduces the Cost and Complexity of Securely Extending e-business to Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Devices

Tivoli Systems Inc. today announced security management and access control products supporting the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Tivoli(R) SecureWay(R) Policy Director has been enhanced to define and manage access to e-business applications and data from virtually any device, from Internet browsers to pervasive devices using WAP. In addition, Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager, an access control solution developed specifically to help e-businesses protect consumers' personally identifiable information, will also support WAP, helping companies control access to personal data accessed through WAP devices.

"As WAP becomes a global standard for providing Internet links on mobile phones, companies will let customers, employees and business partners access e-business applications and data through these devices," said Carl Kessler, vice president and general manager, Tivoli SecureWay at Tivoli Systems Inc. "While our partners work to secure other aspects of WAP communication, such as encryption and authentication, Tivoli's focus on controlling access and providing single sign-on to e-business applications from WAP devices will make it easier for developers to extend e-business applications these non-traditional points of access."

As part of its strategy to extend its management capabilities to the next generation of computing devices, Tivoli will continue to partner with WAP device manufacturers and providers. Tivoli SecureWay will focus initially on the access control and authorization component of WAP security with the enhancements announced today. Future enhancements will be focused on helping WAP application developers go to market faster with secure solutions.

"The number of platforms and applications that a corporation must support is increasing dramatically with the infiltration of PDAs, WAP phones and other non-PC devices. Each new wave of devices needs to be incorporated into as much of the existing infrastructure as possible to allow companies to manage and control their environments effectively," said Abner Germanow, research manager of Internet Security at International Data Corp. "Extending the control of information into the WAP environment is a key strategic requirement for any vendor who already helps customers manage a wide range of systems and platforms in the wired world."

Tivoli SecureWay Support for WAP Devices

-- Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director controls access to e-business

and legacy applications through virtually any client device,

including Web browsers and pervasive devices that use WAP.

-- Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager helps e-businesses protect

        consumers' personally identifiable information accessed
through browsers and WAP devices by providing pre-defined best
practices for controlling access to private information.

-- Both products simplify administration of access control across
multiple applications (WAP and non-WAP), reducing the costs
and complexity of extending e-business applications and data
        to WAP devices.

-- Both products reduce the need to deploy a redundant, parallel
access control solution that controls access to e-business
applications and data from WAP devices.

The Open Group Standard for Access Control

Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director and Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager both include a standards-based, application-independent security and authorization API, named AuthAPI. Based on The Open Group authorization API (aznAPI) specifications, Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director's AuthAPI enables customers to reduce costs associated with building security into applications by reducing the need to write complex security code. AuthAPI is used by Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director and Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager to control access to e-business applications and data accessed through Web browsers and WAP-enabled pervasive devices.
