Zon Launches the First Operator-Independent Mobile Portal in the Netherlands

Versatel Telecom International N.V., (NASDAQ:VRSA)(AEX:VRSA) a rapidly growing, facilities-based competitive provider of voice, data and Internet broadband services in the Benelux and Germany today announced a strategic relationship with Wapmagic. This relationship enables Zon to launch the first operator-independent mobile portal in The Netherlands today, based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard. The relationship will focus on the development of mobile multimedia services from which all Versatel Internet Group related companies (such as 24hours, VuurWerk and Zon) in both the Benelux and Germany will benefit.

The new Zon mobile portal is built and deployed in cooperation with Wapmagic. All 500,000 Zon subscribers with a WAP phone will be able to access the Zon mobile portal using their normal dial-in number, usernames and passwords, independent of their choice of mobile operator. Zon's mobile portal contains services like news, weather and traffic, sports, access to e-mail, stock quotes and other financial information. These mobile multimedia services are based primarily on the WAP standard. This strategic relationship with Wapmagic subscribes Versatel's strategy to play an important part in the mobile telecommunications industry.
