Mobile phone users will soon be able to access their e-mail from their Internet-enabled wireless phones, thanks to a new collaboration announced today between Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Dublin-based VoxSurf Software International Ltd., a developer of software for next-generation wireless devices.
VoxSurf has developed an innovative 'multi-personality' e-mail application which allows users to access their e-mail either through a personal computer, through a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-enabled mobile phone, or through any telephone using voice commands. Under a recent licensing arrangement, Motorola has integrated the application into its Mobile Internet Exchange™ communications platform, also known as the MIX™ platform, and its cyber-assistant, MyaSM.
The MyaSM cyber-assistant represents the advanced technology that can allow users to access Internet, data, e-mail and personal contacts by either reading it on the display of an Internet- enabled wireless phone or by listening to it from any phone. This choice of user interface and device makes the MIX communications platform among the most flexible available today. The MIX platform is a complete, end-to-end solution enabling wireless carriers, service providers and enterprises to offer Internet, data and enhanced voice services and third party solutions to mobile users. In its current form, the MIX platform can allow mobile phone subscribers to read e-mail using a WAP browser. Ultimately, they will be able to listen and respond to e-mail messages using a voice browser via the Mya cyber-assistant.
The voice browser is a specialised software application that makes use of ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) and TTS (Text-to-Speech) software components to create an application that can be used to access Internet data using speech.
