Cerulean and Symbol Technologies Team to Develop Mobile Applications Supporting Ruggedized Devices

Companies to Demonstrate Cerulean Wireless Mobile Software Integrated With Symbol Handheld Devices at APCO 2000

Cerulean Technology(R), Inc., and Symbol Technologies, Inc., announced today an agreement that will enable Cerulean to develop wireless mobile applications that support Symbol's bar code scanning enabled wireless computers, including ruggedized versions of Palm O/S and PocketPC O/S devices for the public safety and mobile government markets.

At APCO 2000 here this week at the Hynes Convention Center, the companies will demonstrate applications combining wireless mobile software from Cerulean and Symbol's SPT 1740 computer, as well as applications featuring Symbol's VS4000, a handheld imager that reads traditional linear bar codes, two-dimensional symbologies and digitally captures images. Integration between Cerulean's wireless mobile software and leading ruggedized mobile computing devices such as Symbol's family of products allows public safety and government agencies to deploy a "mobile office in the car" -- saving time in the field while providing secure user-access to critical information in or out of the vehicle.

With Symbol's VS4000, for example, law enforcement officers will be able to read the two-dimensional PDF417 bar codes on drivers licenses and increase officer productivity and reporting accuracy. The VS4000 also allows police officers to capture images of missing persons or property on the scene, and then transmit them digitally to speed the information to other police units to expedite the identification and recovery process. In addition, Cerulean wireless mobile software running on Symbol's SPT 1740 computers allows officers to initiate criminal history inquiries from outside the vehicle.

The agreement between the two companies allows Cerulean to further build on the support for handheld devices, digital imagers, bar code scanners and other ruggedized devices already built into the company's PacketCluster(R) product line. Along with the application developer support provided by Symbol, Cerulean will work with Symbol in driving demand for the new offerings through cooperative marketing campaigns, on-line marketing, working with other Symbol business partners, and teaming with Symbol direct sales teams on major projects.

"Symbol is the market leader in mobile computing solutions for vertical markets; their breadth of mobile devices and durability in the field make them an attractive business partner for Cerulean as we continue to develop new offerings for the Mobile Government marketplace," said David A. Rosi, Cerulean vice president of marketing. "In the handheld segment of the mobile market, the importance of durability and ruggedness is even more critical, and with Symbol's top-of-the-line reputation we know their handheld and portable devices will be well accepted in the market."

"Our product line is extremely well-suited to meeting the needs of the mobile government worker, and we look forward to working with Cerulean as this new marketplace - and the proliferation of handheld computing applications across government - unfolds," said Barry Issberner, vice president, mobile computing, Symbol Technologies.
