Glenayre and Movil@ccess Launching Mexico's First Commercial Two-Way Wireless Messaging Service

Wireless messaging network to provide wireless e-mail, information services, wireless Internet and commercial applications to Mexico City region

Glenayre Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEMS) and Movil@ccess, Mexico's first Personal Interactive Communications (PIC) company, today announced that they are launching Mexico's first commercial two-way wireless messaging service. The first of the ReFLEX-based networks that will provide this service has been installed in the Mexico City metropolitan area and is being inaugurated today. Similar networks are planned for Monterrey and Guadalajara, and are scheduled for completion and activation during the fourth quarter, 2000. In addition to the networks, Movil@ccess plans to purchase quantities of Glenayre's @ctiveLink(TM)two-way wireless messaging module, which works with the Handspring Visor, and AccessLink(TM)II two-way wireless messaging device. Movil@ccess is a subsidiary of Biper, S.A. de C.V. (BMV: BIPERB)(NASDAQ: BIPRY).

"Our interactive wireless messaging services bring a new range of convenient features to subscribers. Our network infrastructure and devices allow users to send and receive e-mail as well as access Internet information services for the stock market, weather, sports, travel and other information on demand, and stay continually in touch with their desktop computers through wireless devices. This is yet another demonstration of the worldwide acceptance of our strategy to be the leader in wireless unified messaging by bringing 'Solutions for an @ctive World(TM)' to the global marketplace," stated Eric Doggett, President and Chief Executive Officer of Glenayre.

"We have seen tremendous growth of interactive wireless messaging in the United States as well as increased interest around the globe. We believe that Mexico is ready to see explosive growth in this area and, through our relationship with Movil@ccess, Glenayre will be building the networks that will meet this demand," Doggett continued.

The new interactive messaging system will use Glenayre's proven ReFLEX-based technology to dramatically enhance the power and product offerings of Biper's existing all-Glenayre communications network, already the most advanced in Mexico. ReFLEX-based networks are high-speed wireless data networks that allow for two-way, interactive messaging. Unlike other wireless networks, ReFLEX-based networks provide broad coverage and superior in-building penetration ensuring that subscribers will receive their messages in almost any location.

"These new services will put Movil@ccess at the forefront of the industry," said Oscar Camacho, CEO of Movil@ccess and Biper. "In particular, they will provide the necessary link to other services in order to enable our clients to stay in touch with their families or their businesses, as well as access the information they want and need from the Internet, while they are away from their offices. Glenayre's technology is a proven winner, and the new range of services that interactive wireless messaging technology makes possible will greatly expand the benefits of messaging services for our customers, especially our corporate users."

Movil@ccess is planning to offer its subscribers a variety of interactive wireless messaging devices, including Glenayre's @ctiveLink(TM) interactive wireless messaging module bundled with the Handspring Visor(TM) and Glenayre's AccessLink(TM) II interactive wireless messaging device. The @ctiveLink module snaps seamlessly into the Visor's Springboard(TM) slot, wirelessly enabling the powerful personal information management utilities of the Visor. It provides users with Always @ctive(TM) - not session-based - connectivity to ReFLEX-based networks, whether or not it is inserted in the Visor, which means the user does not have to "log on" to the network and the module is constantly receiving messages.

The AccessLink II, rated "best buy" in its class by Consumer Buyers Guide, is the smallest interactive wireless messaging device in the market today. It is powered by a single AA battery that provides approximately 30 days of battery life, has a 4 line EL backlit display and a unique IRDA serial communications port. The port allows the AccessLink II to be a Palm OS and Windows CE PDA companion, allowing it to perform queries to and receive messages from the Internet as well as allowing users to receive and send e-mail messages using a hand activated virtual keyboard.
