PacketVideo Powers the Wireless Video Revolution With Release of End-to-End, Standards-Based Wireless Streaming Solution

PacketVideo Corp., the global leader in wireless media, today announced the release of PVPlatform(TM) 1.0, the industry's first commercially available wireless streaming video delivery system for handheld devices.

PVPlatform is an end-to-end software solution designed to provide encoding, transmission and decoding services that support all major digital wireless telephony standards in use today as well as next-generation wireless networks currently being developed.

PacketVideo's multimedia decoder, PVPlayer(TM), is available, for a limited time, as a free promotional download from http://www.packetvideo.com/update. This Web site provides detailed instructions on how users can download the software onto their computers for transferring to their handheld devices.

Today, PVPlayer is operating on the new Compaq iPAQ, Casio's CASSIOPEIA E115, and the HP Jornada 545. PVPlayer is designed to support multiple operating systems, including Microsoft's new Pocket PC Windows CE 3.0.

"This launch marks the industry's only consumer-accessible, wireless demonstration of real-world streaming media technology," said James Carol, CEO and co-founder of PacketVideo. "We have proven that our software can run on today's networks and that it can be easy and practical to use. We are thrilled to be the first to deliver this advanced technology to the wireless industry."

End-to-End Solutions Available Today

PVPlatform 1.0 is a standards-based, complete solution for wireless service providers, wireless semiconductor and device manufacturers, and wireless content providers. The platform's components are designed to be device, operating system and air-interface independent.

These components include PVAuthor(TM), a professional encoding product that prepares rich media for transmission over wireless networks; PVServer(TM), which stores and distributes rich media to subscribers over wireless networks; and PVPlayer(TM), the end piece of the suite that decodes and plays rich media for viewing on current and next generation mobile information devices such as handheld computers, SmartPhones, and digital wireless handsets.

PacketVideo's platform is based on the MPEG-4 (Motion Pictures Expert Group 4) compression standard and is designed to be device, operating system and air-interface independent. PacketVideo's products offer error-resilient technology that recognizes and conceals errors inherent in wireless networks, enabling mobile information devices to receive enhanced video image quality.

"As wireless Internet-based data services become increasingly widespread, wireless service providers and content providers will seek to further expand their offerings to include the wireless delivery of multimedia content," said Gary Arlen, president of Arlen Communications Inc., a Bethesda, Md., research firm. "With today's commercial launch of its wireless streaming platform, PacketVideo is well positioned to deliver the multimedia capabilities of the Internet over wireless networks."
