wirefreetown.com project launched Killarney chosen for unique wireless internet lab

a research project which aims to test the real applications of MCommerce and the wireless internet. Focused on the town of Killarney in the South West of Ireland - the concept aims to create the largest penetration of wireless internet devices in the world and establish a vibrant portal and MCommerce network around the town. Advanced wireless technologies of all types will form part of the development.

A simple wap page has been built on all local business in Killarney. Enhanced FREE sites for each business will be completed by 18 Sep 2000. All content is being developed in WAP but uniquely from 28 August also in iMode and HDML (US Handheld Device Markup Language) wireless internet languages.

Killarney residents can fill in a form and create their own WAP pages. Seminars and training programmes will take place in mid September and users will be equipped with the latest software FREE from wapprofit.com to allow them to create and maintain their own Wireless Internet sites.

Daily updated information on all day to day business activity will be available from mobile phones 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. International visitors can access guided walking and sightseeing tours directly from their handset before and during their visit to Killarney.

In the second phase of the programme commencing in late December 2000 a range of Mobile Commerce applications will be introduced. In early 2001 there will be implementations of wireless broadband internet services and in late 2001 early tests of GPRS systems running advanced wireless internet services.

Speaking of the project, Peter Bellew, CEO-wapprofit.com said:- "This project will be an acid test of the real uses of the Mobile Internet. We are blowing away a lot of the hype and bringing the technology down to a useful local level. For once we will know what consumers really want and it should help in predicting what the "Killer applications" will be in the mobile world."
