Aspiro Delivers Mobile Telephony Service for the Deaf to Telia MobileDenmark

Aspiro, the supplier of mobile Internet services, has signed an exclusive agreement with the Danish mobile operator Telia Mobile for the delivery of Mobile Textphone, a mobile telephony service for the deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired that is supported by the World Federation of the Deaf (WDF).

The deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired communities were previously excluded from using standard mobile phones despite their tremendous need for aids which would help them to communicate. With the Mobile Textphone service and a mobile phone, callers and receivers can type messages to each other and instantly see the letters appear on a screen, making the service as near to normal telephony as it is possible to get. Mobile Textphone also allows callers to communicate with fixed-line phones in the home.

"We have long been searching for this type of service and are extremely happy that it can now be offered to our members in Denmark. Mobile Textphone will make life a lot easier for many of us. And because the service is being launched at the end of this year, I'm certain that one of this year's top Christmas gifts among our members will be a Telia Mobile subscription and the Mobile Textphone service," says Knud Sndergaard, Chairman of the Danish Deaf Association.

The number of potential users (i.e. deaf, hard of hearing or speech- impaired individuals plus one relative) of the Mobile Textphone service in Denmark is estimated to be at least 80,000.

"The number of Textphone service user is, of course, fairly limited, but we view it as a very important service that this target group also be given the opportunity to enjoy mobile communication," says Teddy Pedersen, Director of Product Development at Telia Mobile.

The value of the order amounts to at least 710 000 euro over a time period of five years. The service will be commercially available on the Danish market from November 15 this year.
