Business Portals Make Mobile Work Says Delphi Group Research

Untethered eBusiness Portals Will Populate Mobile Devices in the Next 12 months

New research from Delphi Group, the leading business portal industry analyst firm, finds that despite the rapid competition and innovation among manufacturers of mobile information appliances, the real innovation in ubiquitous computing lies in extending business portal software to new devices.

Delphi Group research found the untethered business portal is the vital link for the mobile workforce:

-- Over 50% of the companies surveyed anticipate using their business portal to deliver corporate information to their growing workforce of mobile professionals within the next two years. Individuals whose livelihood depends on being connected to voice mail, email, fax communications and electronic business transactions will be the first constituencies of untethered portals.

-- Within two years, the business portal will be the pervasive computing systems platform and the primary vehicle for conducting e-business.

-- Portal software developers are offering mobile access initially from PDAs and later from cellular telephones with support for the Wireless Access Protocol, the Wireless Markup Language, and Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformers.

-- Maintaining the quality and integrity of content integrated from the web is the new challenge. Third party syndicated content--from custom tailored indices of internet content, and marketing intelligence information, to educational services, and vertically-oriented business process templates--will fill that need.

"Business portal software is rapidly becoming a point of convergence for the enterprise," observed Hadley Reynolds, Delphi Group director of research. "Business professionals do not want to learn new applications written for their wireless devices -- they want to take their business portals with them. Within a very short time, untethered portals will make the problems of synching and docking PIM's and PDA's obsolete."

Earlier this year, Delphi Group research projected over $5 trillion of transactions will flow through B2B portals and exchanges by 2002.
