Ericsson and Wind River sign strategic worldwide agreement for Bluetooth integration

- Partnership between initiator of Bluetooth Wireless Technology and embedded technology leader enables cutting-edge smart devices Today, Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Nasdaq: ERICY) and Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND) announced an agreement to integrate Bluetooth wireless technology from Ericsson into Wind River's marketshare-leading embedded development software.

This agreement enables leading-edge consumer original equipment manufacturers to easily leverage Ericsson's pioneering Bluetooth development efforts within their own embedded applications. Smart devices that will benefit from Bluetooth include mobile phones, Internet appliances, digital still cameras, medical monitoring devices, and car information systems. Bluetooth wireless technology is a universal, short-range personal area networking radio technology that can be used to provide wireless connectivity for voice, data and multi-media applications. Bluetooth devices are expected to begin shipping in volume by late 2000, and estimates of sales volumes range from 700 million units (IDC) to as high as 2.1 billion units by 2005 (Merrill Lynch).

Over 2000 adopter companies have joined the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) to develop and sell Bluetooth devices, making Bluetooth wireless technology the fastest growing de facto communication standard ever. Ericsson is one of the nine Bluetooth Promoters in the Bluetooth SIG and has built up an undisputed expertise in the Bluetooth implementation and licensed its complete Bluetooth wireless technology to a number of leading companies worldwide. The Bluetooth HOST Stack and related development tools for testing and verification from Ericsson will be integrated with Wind River's operating systems and Tornado integrated development environment. The Bluetooth HOST

Stack from Ericsson has been qualified according to the Bluetooth Qualification Program, which ensures that the product complies with the Bluetooth specification. Wind River will market the Bluetooth HOST Stack and development tools from Ericsson as part of complete solutions from Wind River to begin shipping within the next three months.

"Wind River sees innovative new technologies such as Bluetooth wireless technology integral to our rapidly broadening connectivity strategy for consumer devices," said JC Sarner, vice president and general manager of

Wind River's Consumer business unit. "Ericsson is the leading supplier of Bluetooth wireless technology and because of the pre-integrated components resulting from this agreement, customers will find creating cutting-edge Bluetooth applications much easier so that they can bring products to market faster."

"This partnership will significantly accelerate the number of devices using Bluetooth wireless technology," said Jan Ahrenbring, Vice President, Marketing and Communications at Ericsson Mobile Communications. "Consumers will also get the added benefit of reliable, scalable devices built with the embedded technology from Wind River and its huge number of WindLink® partners who have compatible technology. Ericsson chose to work with Wind River because of its leading position in the embedded market."
