Ericsson is launching the new 11 Mbps Wireless LAN product aimed at the enterprise market. The new features of the product are much higher performance for wireless data communications combined with increased security. A centrally placed WLAN guard is able to handle several access points giving added value to the product.

The new feature is the centrally located WLAN guard that can handle several access points. This product dramatically improves performance and provides a cost efficient security solution for WLAN. Features include authentication to ensure the right user is accessing the network and encryption that protects confidential, sensitive information. In this way companies can be sure that there is no unauthorized access to the network, no eavesdropping of data and no replaying or tampering with material.
The 11 Mbps product complies with the 1EEE 802.11b standard for Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) WLAN. It adds value to Ericsson's already strong Wireless LAN portfolio that has systems operating successfully in companies throughout the world. An office using Wireless LAN is completely flexible. People can walk away from their desks for meetings, bringing a laptop computer or a phone with them and remain connected. Wireless LAN is particularly suitable for companies based on several sites or for those that undertake frequent mobile project work. Driving development Ericsson's solution for security is a key step for the future development and deployment of Wireless LANs. A service provider can now take WLAN access into selected public areas and hot spots. Business travelers will be able to access their office networks using laptops or PDAs and download confidential files at even higher speeds. In the future Ericsson will take the WLAN technology to the 5GHz frequency band and, based on the Hiperlan/2 standard, provide higher bitrates, quality of service and cellular interworking. This means that the 11 Mbps Wireless LAN represents not only flexibility, mobility and good value in current office contexts, but it also forms a basis for the nomadic office of the future where employees can remain on the network wherever they are.
