Fast-growing Czech Travel Site Chooses GemStone E-business Software for Wireless and Web-based Airline Ticket Transactions

Fractal Ltd., a company that handles one-third of turnover on online B2C market in the Czech Republic, chooses GemStone's flexible, scalable, and high-performance platform to support further growth

GemStone Systems, Inc., the software infrastructure technology leader for the new B2B economy, today announced that its high-performance, multi-tier application server software was chosen as the architectural platform for Fractal.cz, a fast-growing Czech B2C and B2B site for purchasing airline tickets and other travel services using the Internet and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

The GemStone e-business solution provides a platform for developing, deploying and managing scalable, high-performance, multi-tier applications such as those being implemented by Fractal Ltd., the developer of eCommerce exchanges and portals like Fractal.cz and FractalCorp.com (the English version of Fractal.cz). "We outgrew our original software solution within the first six months after developing Fractal.cz," commented Jiri Berger, CEO and executive director, Fractal.cz. "We chose GemStone's e-business software, because we needed a scalable, easier-to-use, multi-user object processing engine that links to large class library and allows centralized sharing and maintenance of business objects."

"Because Fractal is growing at an astonishing rate, it needed a scalable and adaptable solution that is easy to implement and can efficiently access, share and retrieve huge amounts of data and information simultaneously," said Doug Pollack, vice president of marketing for GemStone. "In addition to the ability to support rapid growth, the company needed a solution that could support future enhancements such as the ability to research itineraries, make reservations, and utilize e-payments, and access global databases over the Internet or using wireless devices such as mobile phones, pagers, handheld PCs and two-way radios."

Built around a robust, multi-user object processing engine, GemStone's e-business software can be distributed across multiple platforms in a heterogeneous environment via federation, CORBA, Java, and Smalltalk interfaces. GemStone's Extreme Clustering(TM) technology provides the scalability and adaptability required for high-volume sites. It also enables developers to make needed programming changes without having to take the system down. New functionality can be added dynamically without interrupting the operation of the site.
