Fujitsu Media Devices Ltd Selects CSR's Single-chip Solution for Bluetooth Modules Major OEM Designs -- in CSR's BlueCore01 Chip

Fujitsu Media Devices Ltd (FMD) and CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) have announced that FMD has developed two Bluetooth modules designed around BlueCore(TM)01, a single-chip Bluetooth solution from CSR.

The modules, one an extended PC Card, the other an extended Compact Flash sized card, will enable multiple intelligent devices --such as PCs, laptops, handheld devices and digital cameras -- to communicate without cables, using short-range radio technology.

Fujitsu Media Devices Ltd joins a growing band of companies, including Alcatel, ALPS Electric and Tochigi Mitsumi that have selected BlueCore01 for their Bluetooth designs. The chip's high level of integration -- other solutions comprise separate ICs for the baseband and RF circuits -- provides major size, cost and time to market efficiencies that is enabling a whole range of Bluetooth applications to be realized.

"BlueCore is providing our customers with a commercial edge in what will be a very competitive market," said Glenn Collinson, Marketing Director at CSR. "The fact that FMD has already developed working cards based on BlueCore further demonstrates the enormous advantages of CSR's technology to help our customers rapidly roll out new products."

Both FMD cards are Class 1 modules with movable antennas; this means that they have an operating range of 100 meters, making them ideally suited for office applications. In addition to these cards, FMD is also developing a small-sized USB module for the OEM market, designed to be embedded into PCs and peripheral devices.

CSR's BlueCore01 integrates both radio and baseband circuits for a 2.4GHz Bluetooth solution in a single chip. It is implemented in CMOS technology and together with an external Flash ROM containing the CSR software stack compatible with Bluetooth, it provides a fully compliant Bluetooth system for data and voice communications. The design is optimized to require very few external RF components to allow a rapid design of the motherboard, and therefore the fastest possible time-to-market at the lowest overall cost.
