Motorola Introduces New Two-Way Wireless Handheld Device

Timeport P935 Personal Interactive Communicator

End-To-End Mobile Messaging Solution With E-mail and Internet Access, PDA Functionality and Customizable Software Applications

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced its newest entry in the wireless web and messaging arena, the Timeport(TM) P935 personal interactive communicator (PIC), an end-to-end communications solution for highly scheduled, mobile business professionals who need around-the-clock remote connectivity and up-to-date information to make immediate decisions.

Building on the acceptance of the innovative, award-winning PageWriter(R) two-way messaging devices, the new Timeport P935 PIC is a wireless handheld device, much like a mini-computer, that offers a host of connectivity solutions including wireless e-mail and Internet access as well as synchronization for optimum personal information management.

Designed as a mini-computer "clamshell," the P935 PIC is connected to the wireless network, enabling users to type in, send and receive e-mails and messages even when in meetings and conferences, at the theater or dining out. Software built into each P935 PIC enables it to function as a powerful PDA and, with third-party applications, users can access data from the Internet and interface with enterprise information.

Optimized for business users, the Timeport P935 PIC connects to corporate or personal databases and offers customizable add-on software to handle specific tasks and meet their changing needs. For complete mobility and secure e-mail functionality, users can utilize the same e-mail address as their enterprise e-mail.

"A valuable wireless communications solution, the P935 PIC extends the benefits and power of the Internet and enterprise information, and enables business professionals to stay connected for optimum efficiency," stated Mike Pellon, Vice President and General Manager, Motorola's Wireless Messaging, PCS. "If you're a mobile worker and need to connect to your messages, your office, your clients or the Internet, Motorola's most advanced solution is the P935. It's a compelling proposition: a smart wireless Web device to help you communicate and link you to vital information when you need it. It incorporates a host of advanced capabilities in an easy-to-use and easy-to-take-along package."

Always-On Remote Messenger and Information Center

Taking communication to a higher level, the Timeport P935 PIC enables users to send and receive e-mail with any Internet address, exchange messages with other two-way messaging devices, transmit faxes(1) and send messages to traditional one-way pagers. It even lets users send digitized voice messages through telephone lines(1).

Always on for e-mail and information exchange, the Timeport P935 PIC is the ultimate remote connection - there is no need to plug in or log on(2) to handle messaging functions. Unlike other wireless devices which require logging onto the wireless network, the P935 PIC is always in its two-way communications mode.

Like Motorola's family of PageWriter(R) personal interactive communicators, the P935 can be customized through add-on software to handle specific kinds of information like financial tracking, sales figures and real estate updates. Sales people in the field, for example, can place work or sales orders directly, improving efficiency and increasing productivity. With access to Internet-based information through add-on applications, users can request and receive information on airline schedules, driving directions, restaurant listings or movie times, for example.

"Motorola is leading the way with engineering excellence, design and technology innovations," Pellon added. "As Motorola develops truly targeted technology, we are looking at the needs of our mobile professional audiences and delivering wireless technology that can be tailored to individual requirements, enabling a new higher level of personal autonomy and connectivity. It's no longer just about staying in touch, it's about linking to vital information that aids the decision-making process and increases efficiency and productivity."

High Tech Functionality

With 4.5 MB of total memory, the Timeport P935 PIC is powered by the new Motorola Wisdom(TM) Operating System 4.0, which enables it to be tailored with add-on applications and extend its PDA functions, allowing users to integrate messaging with Personal Information Management (PIM) functions. A developer-friendly software platform for portable messaging products, the Wisdom OS provides support for messaging related applications and offers more efficient use of the device's memory.

With its infrared compatible port, it can exchange information with other infrared capable products, including compatible PCs and other handheld products, like Palm or Handspring organizers. The device can actually "beam" information like address book contacts and scheduled events from one device to another (wired or wireless), empowering work groups and solidifying new business relationships. This unique capability also lets users send - or beam - information to selected IrDA-compliant printers, and then print out information while on the go.

Uniting the Timeport P935 PIC with personal computers, the unit's TrueSync(R) technology gives users the ability to access and manage relevant information on-the-go - such as contact/address book info, calendar, to-do list and more - and synchronize their information with other applications and services(3).

Compatible with Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0, the TrueSync solution enables the P935 PIC to seamlessly synchronize information with popular desktop PIMs, Internet planners, other devices and wireless phones, including: Microsoft Outlook 97/98/00, Microsoft Schedule+ 7.0/7.5, Lotus Notes 4.5/4.6/5.0, Lotus Organizer 97/97GS/4.1/5.0, Starfish Sidekick 98/99, TrueSync Desktop, Interact.com Act! 3.06/4.x, Yahoo! Calendar and Address Book, Excite Planner, Palm-based organizers, Microsoft Windows CE devices and compatible Motorola wireless phones.

With a contacts section that holds information for hundreds of contacts - name, title, email, address, fax numbers (office and home), phone numbers (office, home, mobile) or many more fields, the P935 PIC serves as a complete portable message center. Users can read, write and organize their messages, then sort and file them in multiple folders. As a time management tool, the unit's calendar has multiple viewing options to support different administrative styles with task lists and memo page.

User Friendly, Time Effective

One of the values of the P935 PIC is its non-intrusiveness. It offers a choice of user-selectable alert modes - and two of them are vibrate and silent - to enable users to be instantly alerted with messages or necessary information, wherever they may be.

The P935 PIC user-friendly features include a graphical user interface (GUI) with the familiar QWERTY keyboard. It also has a high resolution graphic display screen with EL backlighting which can hold up to 9 lines by 29 characters of text message on one screen, for easy reading and scrolling. The unit weighs 6.7 oz with battery.

The Timeport P935 personal interactive communicator is expected to be available starting October 2000 at wireless carriers and resellers nationwide for a suggested retail price of under $400. The device is styled in either classic black or silver - both with sleek rubber molding for ergonomic handling.

The P935 PIC runs on Motorola's ReFLEX(R) protocol technology, which helps improve reliability and extends battery life.
