Compact and rugged, a new pen notepad computer from Intermec Technologies Corp. connects field and mobile workers to enterprise data via wireless wide-area, local area and personal area networks.
Slightly larger than a postcard, Intermec's new 700 Handheld Computer weighs less than 16 ounces, including its rechargeable battery. Based on the commercial version of Microsoft's Pocket PC(R) operating system, the ruggedized device is targeted for utility, service, delivery, healthcare and retail operations. The computer runs virtually all 32-bit Windows CE applications, including Intermec's RoutePower(TM) software as well as Internet e-mail.
"The 700 has all the right wireless capabilities to help mobile workers stay better connected to their main organization," said Marilyn Quarders, Intermec's product manager, Handheld Computers. Field organizations can use the 700 to connect workers via wireless public data networks for up-to-the minute dispatching and timely reporting of customer information. The unit also supports the most widely used wireless local area networking standards, including 11 Mbps Wi-Fi certified 802.11 High Rate and Open Air. Workers can get real-time inventory and order status from anywhere inside a warehouse or manufacturing facility, Quarders said.
"Retail store workers will find the 700 especially well-suited for ending long checkout lines," Quarders said. "In conjunction with a wireless network, retail clerks can look up in-stock items and handle credit card sales all without a cash register."
The 700 also includes support for Bluetooth wireless communications devices to eliminate cables and simplify connections with peripheral devices such as printers and cell phones. Options include an external modem to allow batch downloads of data via conventional telephone lines, and vehicle and desktop docking stations, plus an internal bar code scanner that reads conventional linear codes as well as PDF417.
Based on Intel's 206 MHz StrongARM(R) SA-1110 processor, the 700 has 32 Mb. of RAM and a Compact Flash Slot for additional flash memory. The user-replaceable, rechargeable lithium ion (LiON) battery offers 8 to 10 hours of continuous use on a single charge, making it ideal for a full shift's work. Its rugged 3.5 by 7.25 by 1.5 inch case withstands multiple four-foot drops onto concrete and its high-contrast, 3.75 inch (diagonal measure), 1/4 VGA touch screen offers a transreflective display for excellent readability indoors and out. The unit also has an infrared port (Fast IrDA).
First production release is scheduled for Q1 2001.
