PHONE.COM ANNOUNCES NEW END-TO-END WIRELESS INTERNET SECURITY THROUGH ITS SECURE ENTERPRISE PROXY
Strong Encryption, WAP Standards and Universal Network Support Assure Secure Data Transmission
Phone.com,
Inc. (Nasdaq:PHCM), today announced the introduction of the Phone.com™ Secure
Enterprise Proxy that provides complete, standards-based end-to-end security for
the delivery of wireless Internet content and applications to mobile handsets.
The Secure Enterprise Proxy is designed to meet next-level security needs of
application developers of mobile banking and mobile commerce services, as well
as corporate intranet applications that can now be safely extended outside a
company’s firewall to a mobile workforce. Using the strongest encryption
standards available, such as 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Wireless
Transport Layer Security (WTLS), the Secure Enterprise Proxy enables delivery of
today’s highest level of security across the Internet and a wireless network.
Utilizing the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) End-to-End security
specification, the Secure Enterprise Proxy creates a secure session between a
mobile phone and a secure Web server without special configuration required by
either the mobile phone subscriber or the wireless network operator. Called
Dynamic Proxy Navigation, this feature allows enhanced ease-of-use for
subscribers and enables a quick connection between a mobile handset and an
enterprise. The Secure Enterprise Proxy conforms to global WAP standards,
including WAP Transport Layer End-to-End Security specification and WAP 1.2.1,
for interoperability with Internet-enabled handsets, network operator WAP
gateways, as well as back-end Web servers.
"The introduction of Phone.com's Secure Enterprise Proxy Server is a
milestone in delivering the highest level of security for mobile banking, mobile
commerce and enterprise applications," said Kevin Ellis, senior product
marketing manager of Enterprise Proxy and Security for Phone.com. "In
addition to offering a standards-based end-to-end wireless secure data delivery
solution for developers, we have designed the Secure Enterprise Proxy to work
with legacy WAP handsets for a seamless experience for the subscriber, as well
as a modular and scaleable feature for the network operator. Our focus is on
enabling secure solutions to grow as new applications and more subscribers are
added to the network."
To enable backward compatibility with legacy handsets, the Secure Enterprise
Proxy will use WTLS "tunneling." Working together with Phone.com’s
UP.Link™ Server, the Secure Enterprise Proxy will create a WTLS tunnel that
allows end-to-end secure data to be passed through a network operator’s
gateway without decryption. Unlike two-legged security alternatives that allow
text and data to be vulnerable to interception outside of an enterprise, the
WTLS tunneling feature keeps the data encrypted until it reaches the enterprise
destination.
Providing universal network support, the Secure Enterprise Proxy is designed
to deliver a network-independent solution using Internet Protocol (IP) that
works with any wireless data network, including GSM communications, CDMA, TDMA,
iDEN, and CDPD networks. Emerging 2.5G and 3G technologies, such as GPRS and
UMTS, are also supported, leveraging existing standards into next-generation
networks. The Phone.com Secure Enterprise Proxy is expected to be generally
available from wireless operators, system integrators and value-added resellers
in calendar Q1 of 2001. Requirements for the Secure Enterprise Proxy include Sun
Enterprise Server with 170MHz Ultra SPARC processor, 256 RAM and 4 GB free disk
space.
