Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Introduces Palm-Based Wireless Access for eCommerce Sites

New Service Helps Companies Capture Revenues From Handheld Users

The Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the Internet market, today announced new technology enabling eCommerce sites to be accessed by wireless Palm(TM) PDAs and compatible devices with limited recoding. Smith Micro's consulting services can quickly integrate the new support for wireless-enabled handheld devices on websites powered by a wide variety of tools, allowing companies to generate new revenues from online customers using Palm computers, Windows CE devices and other handheld digital assistants.

The new Palm-compatible support extends the capabilities of the company's Wireless WebDNA technology for accessing websites via wireless Internet-enabled phones. This new solution capitalizes on the growing popularity of handheld devices for conducting Internet business away from the PC. The relatively large screen size of the handheld's display and the option to add a keyboard make it easier for users to view information and enter data, producing a highly practical alternative for wireless surfing and shopping.

With Wireless WebDNA, handheld access can be added to existing websites without extensive reprogramming or manual transcoding, allowing companies to maximize their investment in their existing data. A Wireless WebDNA-enabled site automatically recognizes whether a request for access originates with a handheld device, wireless phone or standard web browser, then dynamically adjusts the data display accordingly.

A site can be configured so that repeat customers using wireless handheld devices do not need to re-enter personal information that is already contained on the standard website. In addition, the technology can identify the zip code nearest to the Palm user's location and use that information to quickly deliver data on local retailers who carry the company's product or other location-sensitive subjects. Site administrators can also update information remotely by logging into a password-protected area from their handheld device. This makes it possible for administrators to change promotions, respond to competitors' pricing, remove out-of-stock product or make other site changes while they are away from the office.

"Handhelds are rapidly gaining ground as a solution for accessing the Internet from the road, so the ability of our Wireless WebDNA technology to support access by users of Palm-type devices opens up a new range of opportunities for websites in general and eCommerce sites in particular," said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet Solutions Division of Smith Micro Software. "Now companies can quickly and cost-effectively bring their websites to the growing population of handheld enthusiasts and thereby make their sites available to customers wherever they are."
