Socket Adds Wireless Web Access, Bar Code Scanning and Ethernet Connectivity to New HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC

Battery Friendly Family of Plug-in Cards Expands Connectivity of HP's New Mobile Device

Socket Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:SCKT)(PSE:SOK) today announced a family of connectivity solutions for Hewlett-Packard Company's new HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC. Socket's energy-efficient plug-in cards include the Digital Phone Card, which can connect HP's latest handheld device to a data-capable mobile phone for wireless web browsing, e-mail, and remote network access. Additional cards from Socket add bar code scanning capability, Ethernet connectivity, and general-purpose COM ports for attaching serial peripherals.

Socket's Digital Phone Card takes advantage of the HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC's rich color screen, built-in web browser and full-function e-mail system by allowing users to attach the handheld computer to a variety of data-capable mobile phones made by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Siemens and others. The Digital Phone Card enables mobile professionals to use these phones as wireless modems for mobile Internet access. To use the Digital Phone Card, users must subscribe to wireless data services available from Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, VoiceStream Wireless, Pacific Bell and other carriers in the U.S., Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility in Canada, or GSM service providers worldwide.

Socket's Low Power Ethernet Card allows users to connect the HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC to a local area network, offering fast synchronization, e-mail, and Internet access from any office or conference room on a campus network. Socket's bar code scanner systems and connection kits make mobile data collection fast and accurate. Socket's serial COM cards connect to serial RS-232 peripherals such as printers, scanners, GPS receivers, and data acquisition equipment.

To make installation a snap, HP has created a plug-and-play solution by incorporating software drivers for Socket's Digital Phone Card and Low Power Ethernet Card into the HP Jornada 720's read-only memory. This eliminates the need for special setup software and allows users to add connectivity instantly.

"Start with the new HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC, add Socket's Digital Phone Card, and attach a mobile phone, and you suddenly have the ultimate mobile office," said Peter Phillips, director of product marketing for Socket. "The combination gives you everything you need to run your most important applications wirelessly, including e-mail, web browsing, web-based business applications, or data exchange between your handheld PC and your corporate network. All you're missing is a desk."

"HP and Socket have worked closely together to ensure compatibility between the Jornada family of PC companions and Socket's Battery Friendly plug-in cards," said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager of HP's Asia Pacific PC Division. "As a result of this collaboration, the HP Jornada 720 works readily with Socket's broad range of plug-in cards which offer mobile, enterprise-wide applications for both wireless and wired connectivity."
