Aether Systems Launches ScoutBuilder

Newest Member of Aether's ScoutWare Family Facilitates Development of Powerful Wireless and Mobile Applications

Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:AETH), a leading provider of wireless data products and services, today announced the general availability of ScoutBuilder(TM), a visual, rapid application development tool for building and deploying mobile and wireless applications for the Palm OS platform. ScoutBuilder applications provide handheld device users with fast and simple access to valuable enterprise data, boosting productivity while extending all the valuable assets of the IT enterprise.

ScoutBuilder is a true application development solution that enables developers to quickly and easily create robust applications that are executed on Palm operating system based devices. From customer databases and inventory, to stock market tracking and project scheduling, ScoutBuilder facilitates development of mobile applications for every aspect of business. The release of ScoutBuilder fulfills Aether's mission to make ScoutWare(TM) - already an industry standard for data synchronization and device management - a complete, end-to-end solution for developing and deploying enterprise mobile computing solutions.

How it works

The ScoutBuilder Integrated Development Environment (IDE) presents the developer with a graphical interface where the application is designed - forms are painted, tables are defined, and objects are scripted together for execution. This visual design component enables users to paint forms using controls such as check boxes, edit fields, and list boxes. ScoutBuilder provides a full-featured BASIC-like language for scripting the events surrounding these controls - tap, open, close, scan, and others. The scripting language can also go outside the application to access external modules for additional functionality.

Plug-in environment

The ScoutBuilder environment is extended through the use of plug-ins that provides a fast and efficient way to expand the ScoutBuilder development environment. For example, one of the standard ScoutBuilder plug-ins enables developers to quickly and easily define and populate a ScoutBuilder table from an existing open database connectivity (ODBC) data source, while another automatically creates the framework for a data synchronization conduit for use with Aether's ScoutSync product.
