iControl's SmartIO and iGATE Interfaces Convert Palm Handhelds Into Mobile Diagnostics and Test Devices

iControl, Inc., the leader in remote control and data acquisition via the Internet, today announced new interfaces for its SmartIO(TM) and iGATE(TM) products that enable technicians to use Palm(TM) handheld computers for onsite diagnostics, instrumentation, and test. The interfaces can also provide the Palm handhelds with access to embedded modems in iGATE products for data connections to the Internet or the corporate office.

iControl's suite of web-enabling products collect data from remote systems (e.g. oil wells, wafer-fabrication equipment, vending machines), translate the data into Internet Protocol, and transmit the data to the Internet for viewing, analysis, archiving, and reporting. Event monitoring sends a page to service technicians when a data value exceeds defined thresholds. Once onsite, the technician has quick access to the real-time data through a serial port connection between the iControl monitoring devices and the Palm handheld. State transitions and safeguard commands can be issued to the customer's remote systems through onboard software, a web browser, or the Palm handheld menu.

"Palm products provide a simple, portable and cost-effective solution to our field deployment operations," said David Erickson, iControl's Vice-President of Operations. "We chose Palm handhelds for their durability and compact design, as well as their ease-of-use factor, which reduces field service training."
