Intermec Partners with Microsoft to Preload SQL Server 2000 Windows CE on New Mobile Computers

Bundled Solutions Lower Costs and Increase Efficiencies of Mobile Supply Chain Solutions Implementations

Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced it will partner with Microsoft Corporation to offer bundled Windows CE(R) applications on existing and new Intermec mobile computers.

Intermec's first offering under this new agreement is Microsoft's new SQL Server 2000 Windows CE, pre-loaded on Intermec's 5020 handheld data collection PC. Intermec also will offer SQL Server 2000 Windows CE and other Microsoft applications on its recently announced 700 model, a rugged handheld PC with local and wide-area wireless capabilities.

"Preloading software on Intermec's mobile computers eliminates the substantial time and cost associated with loading and configuring individual devices," said Jeff Hovorka, Intermec's handheld product manager. "Intermec is committed to providing these benefits to our customers."

Intermec was the first company to introduce a family of Win CE industrial mobile computers, including the 5020 handheld and 5055 vehicle-mounted computers. Designed for Enterprise Data Collection(TM) tasks from manufacturing to distribution, the family includes stationary, vehicle-mounted and pen-based computers.

"By offering these applications pre-loaded, companies can immediately deploy handheld PCs into demanding, data-intensive enterprise environments without time-consuming set-up procedures," said Hovorka.

According to Hovorka, SQL Server 2000 Windows CE is well-suited for wireless networking applications. "On our wireless-ready 700, SQL Server 2000 Windows CE lets remote users in warehouses or stores perform data-intensive tasks, communicating with an enterprise SQL Server database in real time," Hovorka said. "If the wireless link is temporarily out of range, SQL Server 2000 Windows CE creates records in memory so transactions can be conducted offline. When the link comes back up, it synchronizes with the back-end data center to update the inventory and customer records."

Based on industry-standard software, information collected on Intermec's CE-based handheld PCs is easily integrated into a company's databases. Windows CE-based mobile computers allow IT professionals to use their existing skills and knowledge of PC and networking environments to support automatic data collection systems. With built-in support for Visual Basic, Visual C++ and HTML, the Windows CE operating system gives developers a familiar Windows platform and the ability to quickly create automated data collection solutions, Hovorka said.
