NewsTakes to Repurpose Dow Jones Content for Wireless Internet Devices

Service Can Extend Content Distribution to Wireless Carriers, Portals and Beyond

NewsTakes, Inc., will use its real-time "repurposing" technology to automatically reformat content for Dow Jones Newswires, a division of Dow Jones & Co. Inc. to distribute to any Internet-enabled device, the two companies announced today.

Under the nonexclusive agreement, Dow Jones Newswires will provide selected content to its subscribers who may use NewsTakes technology to receive it on devices in wireless application protocol (WAP), short messaging service (SMS), I-mode and Smartphone formats. Selected Dow Jones Newswires content includes real-time, 24-hour global financial and business news, news summaries, company stories, columns, commentaries, daily and weekly market outlooks, economic indicators and central bank news.

NewsTakes' service "repurposes" content from any source - audio, video, text and graphics - analyzing it automatically and in real-time, and optimizing it for the capabilities of the device. For example, a video news feed can be shown on a wireless PDA as a series of intelligently selected slides, with accompanying audio or text. Similarly, a financial chart originally intended for display on a television or computer can be sized automatically to make it readable on a variety of cellular phones.

Dow Jones Newswires will sell direct content to end-users in Europe and Asia. The companies will cooperate in making the repurposed content available through wireless carriers, portals, and other distribution partners.

"The faster you can get financial news, the more valuable it is to you," said Elias Antar, Executive Director of International Business Management for Dow Jones Newswires. "NewsTakes' technology will help Dow Jones make its content available in the format appropriate for any device our subscribers want to use, wired or wireless, in seconds."

Because the technology can repurpose content with little human intervention, Dow Jones Newswires will be able to let subscribers access the information in new ways.

"Media companies today face great complexity in trying to reach new markets," said Dr. Gurminder Singh, CEO of NewsTakes, who led the team that created its technology. "In the wireless world alone, there are a variety of standards for PDAs and cell phones that have different display capabilities and navigation systems. The way our algorithms can handle those complexities on the fly, and will be able to do so with future Internet devices, makes the task much simpler for both carriers and content providers."
